About the Author
Gilles Dowek is a mathematician, logician and computer scientist, and currently a researcher at the French Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automation (INRIA). He is a member of the scientific board of the Société informatique de France and of CERNA. He is also a consultant with the National Institute of Aerospace, a NASA-affiliated laboratory. He is the recipient of the French Mathematical Society's Grand Prix d'Alembert des Lycéens for his popular science work.

Pierre Guillot is a lecturer in Mathematics at the University of Strasbourg's Institute of Advanced Mathematical Research (IRMA).

Ann and Joe Interview Each Other

Joe: Flee was an average length book. Spree and Three are epics. But the only way to shorten them would be to cut action, and I love the action. I think the Chandler series is loads of fun because it is so over-the-top. We wanted to do a contemporary female James Bond, and that meant sex, gadgets, and above all, big action scenes. But the books just kept going and going. Did we plan on Spree being over 100,000 words?

Ann: I think we originally planned it to be about 60,000, although once we got writing, I knew it would be 80,000. Wrong on both counts. It went to 110,000. And Three went to 150,000.

Joe: Hopefully they all still qualify as quick reads. And seamless ones. We both worked hard to make sure the writing was consistent, so readers couldn't tell which scenes you wrote and which scenes I wrote. What was your favorite scene to write in Spree?

Ann: Tequila riding the horse. It was fun to take a guy who is so athletic and throw him into a situation where he's over his head, at least at first.

Joe: I know you read my novel Shot of Tequila, which introduced him, but was it weird to write for a character you didn't create? I did a Lund section or two (one of your heroes from Pushed Too Far), but not to the degree you did Tequila. And you did a perfect job with him. One I never could have done, because I've never been on a horse. But you did all that professional riding...

Ann: I loved Tequila when I read him, but I was a little nervous about writing from his point of view. As it turned out, it was a lot of fun. I started riding when I was eleven years old, showed my own horse, and worked for a quarter horse trainer in my early twenties. I had a lot to learn about men's gymnastics, though. What was your favorite scene to write, Joe?

Joe: The whole idea behind Flee was to have a female operative in way over her head. One of the set pieces I was excited about was blowing her out of the ninety-fifth floor of the Hancock Building in Chicago, and having her cling to the side of the building. In Spree, I wanted to have a big scene like that, which became the hot air balloons and the high-tension wire.

That scene was challenging to write. I did hours and hours of research about electricity, and I'm sure I still got stuff wrong. But I like how it turned out, and really dig the idea of two women walking a high-tension tightrope, trying to kill each other. In Three, my faves were the Niagara Falls, the blimp fight, and Fleming at the warehouse.

Ann: Our settings also gave us a lot of ideas. I loved doing all the Mexican scenes in Three. The bullfighting. The naked gunfight. The walk through the desert.

Joe: All fun scenes. For Spree, we visited the Badger Ammo plant in Baraboo, and a cool guy named Verlyn Mueller gave us a tour. We saw the reservoir Chandler got stuck in (which is filled with a rare species of salamander) and the cannon area and the graveyard. We were so captivated by all of it, half of Spree's action happens at Badger.

Ann: Oh, and the industrial grinder!

Joe: How could we not use that? It's huge and grinds up cement and metal. That was just begging to have characters fight on it.

Ann: A lot of it also takes place in the neighboring Devil's Lake State Park, a place I've visited since I was a kid.

Joe: You're from Wisconsin. I go there every year on vacation, and have been since 1973. It was nice to set a novel there. People don't normally use "Wisconsin" and "thriller" in the same sentence.

Ann: Although you set Afraid in Wisconsin.

Joe: I did. But that was a horror novel. That's one of the reasons I included Santiago as a bad guy in Spree--he's one of the villains in Afraid.

Ann: I set Pushed Too Far there, too. And a lot of my romantic suspense novels take place in Wisconsin.

Joe: So I guess we've overused America's Dairyland. Three, the third book in the series, takes place in Washington DC, Toronto, Mexico City, Chicago, and Milan.

Ann: The prequel, Exposed, takes place in NYC.

Joe: It was fun using characters from our other books. I also gotta say thanks to our friend Blake Crouch for letting us use Javier and Isaiah. Those are his villains from his books Snowbound and Abandon, and he was cool enough to let us borrow them so we didn't have to make up new characters on our own. So thanks, Blake.

Ann: Are we paying Blake anything?

Joe: Hell no.

Onto another topic, you did the sex scenes in Flee and in Spree, and I just added some naughty bits to them. For Three, we each did a sex scene.

Ann: When people try to guess which part you wrote and which I wrote, they're usually wrong.

Joe: Our styles blend pretty well. So, is Three going to be it for the Codename: Chandler series? Or will there be more books with these characters?

Ann: We've written three Codename: Chandler novellas; Exposed, Naughty, and Hit, which all take place before Flee. Then we'll do the fourth one, Free, coming out in 2014.

Joe: I take full credit for that brilliant title. How many people search each day for a Free ebook?

Ann: That's thinking outside the box.

Joe: You're doing another Val/Lund book, right?

Ann: I'm writing at least two follow ups to Pushed Too Far. Cut Too Deep and Dead Too Soon, in addition to other things. And you have about a billion books planned, don't you?

Joe: I'm doing another Kilborn horror novel called Haunted House, and a sequel to Origin called Second Coming, and anther Jack Daniels book with Blake Crouch, Last Call, among other projects. So the only way we can squeeze in another Chandler is if she becomes a huge hit and fans want more.

Another fast-paced exciting read by these two authors.

It will never be said that Konrath's novels are boring. I'll tell you that. From the second you start reading this book it's knock down, drag out action. Spree starts exactly where Flee left off. I loved Flee. Spree was just as good.

I don't want to go into too much detail in case some haven't yet read any of the Chandler series. Basically, Chandler is a super secret spy working for a government agency that almost no one knows exists. She needs to save one of her 3 remaining sisters from a black site. Complications arise as they always do for her and the action is full tilt ahead.

Love Chandler, love that she's like a superhero. She has to be because the kind of butt whooping she takes in most scenes she has to be. No normal person could go through all of what she does. Still, it's awesome and fast paced and exciting to read through.

I think my one complaint is all the weapons talk. There were so many different guns and knifes I had no idea what was going on. I'd have had to stop every few pages to look up what they were talking about. So... for me that was a little bit of a downside. AR-7, Ghost Hawk knives... it was all over my head. I got the 9MM reference though.

I love the characters. I love the new characters that were introduced. I had wanted to read Ann Voss Peterson's Pushed Too Far before reading this one but the time constraints were a lit tricky to work out. I'll definitely be going back to read that though. I believe a lot of characters in this were also in that novel.

I'm very excited for Three, the next (and maybe even the last) novel in the Chandler series.

I Just couldn't...

Normally, I love books like this. Strong female characters. Guns and things that go boom. Thrill-a-minute popcorn reads that run at breakneck speed.

Oddly, I just couldn't get into this. I liked Chandler and Fleming, but loved Hammett. I liked Tequila. I liked the fact that the author threw in an old favorite in Jack Daniels. But for some reason, the plot left me cold.

Part of the problem may be that this is one in a series - a series I haven't read before. That doesn't usually stop me from enjoying a book. Normally, I can start in the middle of a series and then I get excited and go back and read all the others in the series. This one didn't really work as a standalone. It took about 75 pages to catch my attention. Up until then, I sort of felt like everyone else was already invested in characters I knew nothing about. Almost no time is spent letting us know who these women are and why we should care about them.

Aside from the lack of back story for those of us new to the series, I would say that the book is well written, but I found there was only one character (Hammett) that I was remotely interested in and it really wasn't enough to sustain me.

Love the authors, but this one left me kind of cold.

Massacre

It's getting harder and harder to like Chandler. The woman is an elite killing machine, trained by some of the most hardened men the US government has on offer. She is being hunted by her own equally aggressive twin sister, among other psycho killers, whilst trying to save her other twin sister, who is also a trained operative but is on the good side, and she still manages to get laid. Honestly, who has the time with all that going on?
Also, Chandler's bizarre mind wanderings are getting old. Concentrate!

She's been wanting tips on how to live a healthy lifestyle. She was interested in this book because recently I have been diagnosed with kidney stones (I am 19 years old). Good Book

I have to say there is not much out there on learning OBIA but this book does a pretty good with it. Though if you cannot pick up on things pretty quickly you might have some trouble with this book. The author assumes that you can pick up on the material really pretty fast. On the other side there are good explanations and examples that will get you moving right along. If anything this is a good reference book to keep in your Library. I would most certainly recommend this book!

Macrosocial Evil

No one in my experience has quite explained the nature of true Evil in the way Lobaczewski has. The information in this book is what I would call "high density" since the maximum amount of information is conveyed with a minimum amoumt of words. It's not an easy read because of this but the information contained in this book precisely conveys the essential roots of the problem that humanity faces today.

Lobaczewski speaks of Evil in macrosocial terms, relating it to the word of politics and not from its ambiguous theological perspective. He bases his study of Evil in psycho-dynamical terms focusing on the behavioral dynamics of the psychopath and what motivates them. Lobaczewski studies the nature of Evil clinically, as it should be studied.

When I see the horrid state of the world in the terms Lobaczewski describes then everything fell in place for me. Now I know I'm not crazy. My reading of the book Ponerology explained A LOT to me, and not only confirms my own observations as to why the world is the way it is, but it has helped focus my perceptions and understanding of the nature of reality into a much greater clarity. It's no small wonder why the manuscript of this book has been suppressed. Once reading it one will begin to see the naked emperor.

These psychopaths that have now taken over our governments feed on our fear while feeding us false solutions to our domestic and foreign problems. They give us our governments which at this stage of their "game" are nothing more then Fascist regimes and nothing more then criminal governments in disguise.

In this book I have learned that most, if not all of the governments of the world, have been taken over by a pathological infection from just a small group of psychopaths who understand the psychology of normal people to a very high degree and they have corrupted these governmental structures to the very core. These psychopaths have silently, but with mind boggling persistence and stealth moved in and taken over and hollowed out the very soul of humanity using lies and deception as their weapons of choice. These psychopaths, this inhuman race of pathological deviants, who do not have the capacity to feel conscience and feel the pain of another, now literally rule the world.

One psychopath can terrorize an entire town, even an entire city. The majority of normal people are now ruled by a minority of psychopaths and they have basically made our governments criminal networks. Criminal governments. Those working for these governments are now working for what basically is a criminal enterprise and they don't see it because they are in it and profit by it, yet it is these people who are determining our future and the future of our children.

Mankind is becoming a willing slave to the pathocratic structures created by the inhuman obsessive greed of this small percentage of humanity that cannot feel conscience. This book is a MUST READ. Only by knowing what we are dealing with can we do anything about it without going in circles. We are dealing with an intelligent predator that feeds on the soul of humanity. It seems to me that there are only a very few who are now speaking of psychopathy and (macrosocial) Evil in the way Lobaczewski speaks of it, since it has been suppressed for so long, but knowledge of the behavior of these deviants, these snakes in suites, is essential so we can recognize this "predator within our midst" and then do something about it with any real and lasting results

This book holds information in it that every man, woman, and child on this planet needs to understand; 4-6% of our worlds population are born without conscience. This fundamental deficit in a minority of the population allows our global tragedy to continue unabated.

Our lack of awareness is also a contributing factor. If we properly understood that some people are without conscience we'd protect our society, eliminating them from positions of power, identifying their pseudologic and twisting of words, preventing it from causing damage.
As it is right now, we have major news networks that spew forth psychological bacteria on a daily basis and no one seems to notice.

Properly understood, this tome acts to innoculate the reader against narcissism and conversive thinking, the two major components of consciencelessness.

Knowledge of evil and how to prevent it

It is said that men are born with a good nature. So why is it that there is so much destruction and suffering throughout the human history? Is evil real? How to stop it? This book has the answers to those questions. It is a summary of the first scientific study of what is called macro-social evil and the process by which it spreads in the society.

In the early parts of the book, the author gives an overview on the root cause of macro-social evil: the small percentage of psycho-pathological deviants who nevertheless have a disproportionally large influence on the minds of normal humans. Due to the lack of psychological knowledge among normal humans, these deviants easily infiltrate social groups, movements, etc.. When the society is in a sufficiently hysterical state, the psychological deviants that are always present can transform the entire society into its worst form: a pathocracy. The most notable examples of that are the Roman empire and the Nazi Germany.

The latter parts are devoted to examining the life cycle of a pathocracy: how it forms, evolves and self-destructs. The good news is that a pathocracy self-destructs relatively quickly, just like a particularly dangerous virus quickly killing sick body. The bad news is that even in its short life cycle, a pathocracy can inflict unmeasurable damage to the lives of normal humans living under its rule and those living close to it.

Although it is not a light reading due to the need to compress so much knowledge into a reasonable-sized book, this book is a must read for every human beings with a conscience. It is particularly relevant today as the U.S. is well on the way to become a full-fledged pathocracy. To stop evil, we must first understand evil.

Sam Tranum served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Turkmenistan from 2004 to 2006, and taught journalism at the American University of Central Asia in Kyrgyzstan from 2007 to 2009. He has worked as a staff reporter at the Charleston Daily Mail in West Virginia and the South Florida Sun-Sentinel in Florida, and freelanced for publications including the St. Petersburg Times, the Christian Science Monitor, and Literarytraveler.com. He earned a B.A. in social and global studies from Antioch College, and an M.A. in international relations from the University of Chicago. He's currently reporting on energy and politics in Washington, DC.

A Very Good Book

Mr. Tranum was a Peace Corps Volunteer(PCV) in Turkmenistan from 2004 until 2006, i.e., while the autocratic ruler Saparmurat Niyazov, better known as Turkmenbashi--Father of the Turkmen--was still alive. I served as Charge (temporary Ambassador) of the U.S. Embassy, 2008-2009, so our paths did not cross. After Niyazov's death in late 2006, Turkmenistan changed to a slight degree--and for the better--under Niyazov's successor, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow. All that is to say that I found Mr. Tranum's very well written book quite relevant in describing the difficult, frustrating and, on occasion, rewarding life of many of the PCVs that I came to know in Turkmenistan. He describes in convincing detail the stifling nature of the all pervading bureaucracy and the petty corruption which has made grass roots progress so difficult to achieve in this admittedly extremely conservative society. He also throws in some nicely researched history.

At the same time he describes Turkmenistan itself in such a realistic manner that I could sometimes remember precisely the sound and smell and the very look of the countryside, the markets and the health clinics where many of our PCVs still are assigned and, above all, the meals so lovingly prepared and served by this most hospitable people.

It adds great versimilitude that Mr. Tranum does not hesitate to put in writing his own indiscretions and cultural mistakes. We all make them when we are abroad but we don't usually record them for everyone to read. Bravo to Mr. Tranum for proving that he is an honest observer.

One final note. I have become somewhat obsessive about the lack of proper editing in the publishing world these days. I think it is something of a national disgrace. I don't know whether Mr. Tranum did his own editing or whether his publisher arranged it, but this book is remarkably free of the errors, typos, non-sequiters and the like which seem to fill many of the newly published books I read nowadays.

"Couldn't Put It Down"

No, this book did not make me want to include Tukmenistan in a planned trip through the "-stans". BUT, to my surprise, this slim little power-packed book refused to let me put it down.

It is an unusually well-written example of that generally underwhelming niche genre: political awakening accounts by young American community development volunteers posted to developing countries. They have been around since the'60's and the heady American-idealism-can solve-it-all times of the Alliance for Progress mindset.

But this example is the best I've come across yet: gripping, funny, often ruefully painful and sometimes just infuriating as the author, Sam Tranum, a young middle class idealist of a Peace Corps volunteer, confronts the realities of carrying out community improvement projects in the hyper-paranoaic milieu of a post-Soviet dictatorship rife with petty to high level corruption, inaction, ignorance and, at times, the very real threat to him of personal danger. But Sam just keeps going on, day after day, refusing to give up or to acknowledge reality, figuring out how to elude the authorities and visit forbidden sites around Turkmenistan, organizing summer camps where democracy is tentatively on the agenda, putting up health posters, going for grants that he comes to realize will never produce the desired outcome, and building deep personal relationships with members of his host families, even as they sometimes splinter apart before his eyes under the almost intolerable pressures of "making do"on a daily basis. He comes very close to despair and describes a growing desire to just call it quits and hie on home. Happily,for the reader, he stays on.

Sam Tranum has all the makings of a gifted travel writer, although this narrative is much more than a descriptive book of travels through exotic countries, it is a hands-on participative account of trying to get good stuff done in a country ruled by an all-controlling dictatorship. Sam's skill as a writer is his ability to transform remarkable attention to detail into a bleakly fascinating narrative.

He is a gentle but fiercely honest observer of human foibles, determined traveler and discoverer of everything there is to see and do in a probably the last place on earth anyone young and creative would want to live, a buster of obstacles, bureaucratic and otherwise, and a properly outraged commentator on corruption and barriers to human potential that don't need to be there.

Sam is also a good researcher who sets a historical context, weaving facts and figures about Turkmenistan's history, sociology and present-day way of life into his story so seamlessly that the narrative flows like fiction. I was impressed with the utter richness of detail in the book. He must have kept very thorough notes. Above all, Sam's humanity emerges clearly. It is a terrific book and a great read. And after you have read it, you don't need to go to Turkmenistan. You've been there, done that through the eyes of the right person to have experienced and then described it all.

Welcome to Turkmenistan!

Chances are, if you've heard of Turkmenistan, you've heard of Turkmenbasy (aka: Saparmurat Niyazov), the eccentric former president of Turkmenistan, and his absolutely off the wall laws. But what would it be like to live in those conditions? Sam Tranum answers this question for us. The only flaw is that Turkmenistan comes across as any other corrupt, despotic country.

I've been living in Russia for two years now, so I can certainly sympathize with a lot of his experiences from bureauocracy, unreliable transport and being ripped off. But Turkmenistan is definitely a stranger country, with a lot of absolutely fascinating sites like a massive irrigation canal built through the heart of the desert, crumbling prehistoric ruins of early Indo-European civilization, a burning crater, and of course, self-flattering monuments of Turkmenbasy himself.

The reason that this book gets a five star rating is that Sam Tranum has excellently woven enough history into the narrative of his two year Turkemenistan experience. I came away feeling like I had actually been there, and plowed through the book in just a matter of days (while riding around on unreliable Russian transport, I may add). Though the subject matter will hit home best with other expats who have lived or are living in similar countries, even those who don't travel much would walk away with a good understanding of Turkemenistan, as experienced by a Westerner.

About the Author

Sunday Adelaja is founder and senior pastor of The Embassy of the Blessed Kingdom of God for All Nations in Kiev, Ukraine. The phenomenon of his ministry is that he originates from Nigeria, Africa, and has been able to prove that cross-cultural ministry is possible in the 21st century. He pastors the largest church in Europe with over 25,000 members who are 90 percent white Europeans. The church grew from 7 people in 1994 to 20,000 in 2002 and has now planted more than 300 churches in 15 countries.

Fresh, Practical and Revolutionary

Having heard a lot about the author, a black African, being the pastor of the largest church in Europe(100,000 members in Ukraine with a make up that is 99% white Europeans) with two million new converts, 600 church plants in over 35 nations all within 12 years of the church existence, I was really excited to find this book and I was not disappointed. Every page of the book is an unveiling of the secrets behind this revolutionary church. The keys to having an impactful life and building a nation-changing church are practically uncovered in this book. It is a gold mine of life-changing truth. I recommend it to every Christian and Christian leader who want to leave the ordinary for the extraordinary in their lives and ministries.

A PARADIGM SHIFT INDEED,AND MUCH NEGLECTED SUBJECT

For a while Ive been led by God to understand the mentality of pastors like Sunday and why theyve made such impact. Ive discovered that its the kingdom mentality that makes a difference. The author declares how Jesus spoke very little about the church and 90% on the kingdom.Its an eye opener to see how many churches only focus on "Building their church", when in fact ministries that God is empowering are focused on the The Kingdom in general. He states that CHURCH is our headquearters but that battles are not fought in headquartes, but on the field...the world is the field.LET ME ASSURE YOU:THIS IS NOT JUST ANOTHER BOOK ON EVANGELISM, BUT RATHER A POWERFUL BOOK FULL OF TEACHING ON WHAT THE KINGDOM OF GOD REALLY IS.This book will really broaden your concept and open your mind on how God intends to build his church. Other than Myles Munroe, Ive found very little on this subject. As a pastor, I recomend it to pastors and church leaders. A TRUE PARADIGM SHIFT!BUY IT, YOULL BE CHALLENGED.

Living in a transient world with constantly changing value systems, norms, cultures and mind-sets, we often forget that the God we profess to serve and worship is a God of absolutes and immutability.
CHURCH SHIFT is a profound wake-up call to every Christian from the pulpit to the pew, reminding us that the message of the Lord Jesus was almost entirely about the Kingdom of God and not so much about the Church. This book is a sincere and passionate attempt to re-direct the focus of the Christian to those things which are of eternal value and significance - the principles contained in the Word of God and not religion or our particular expression of it.
Pastor Sunday in this book teaches that the world is subjected to futility so that we might set people free with the news and principles of God's kingdom. This is because we have all the answers and are indispensable to the health and well-being of the nations. The world badly needs us and simply cannot and should not do without us. WHAT AN AWESOME REVELATION OF TRUTH!!!
