Excellent essays, concise viewpoint, required reading

Just received this brief book from Atlas Economic Research Foundation and Students For Liberty along with a request to donate. The book is targeted at college age students to help combat the socialist bias in most university cultures. I thought I'd glance through the book quickly to make a decision if I'd follow up with a donation. I'd read half the essays in the book before I put it back down. Wisely, the publishers lead with an essay from the CEO of Whole Foods - certainly a company that most college students and many 'liberals' relate to. The essays in the book are well written (the Whole Foods essay is actually an invterview, not an essay) and concise with their thesis well articulated. The book explores ideas such as the difference between free-market capitalism and crony capitalism; the value of creative destruction; how capitalism and competition is about cooperation; etc.

My immediate reaction to the book is to buy dozens more to hand out to both like minded and opposite minded. I highly recommend this book as well as the organizations

Thorough and Easy to Understand Collection!

Capitalism takes the blame for a lot of things, particularly in the academy. It produces gross inequalities, perpetuates the status quo, values profits above people, leads to the survival of the fittest and cultural hegemony, etc. This collection of essays, geared toward college students and layreaders, is designed to address where these attributions about capitalism are wrong and, in fact, to show that the opposite of them is often true. Capitalism leads to an increase of wealth for all, cooperation, an upsetting of the status quo over time, etc. Below, I will list just some of the very good essays found in this book.

Section 1 - "The Virtues of Entrepreneurial Capitalism" - contains essays celebrating how capitalism creates incentives for people to create value for others. Economic historian Diedre McCloskey writes that we can trace the industrial revolution primarily to an improvement in how society values its entrepreneurs and creative market actors. David Boaz dispels the idea that capitalism is dog-eat-dog competition, but revolves around cooperation between traders. Tom Palmer relays his personal experience frequenting a for-profit and not-for-profit hospital, arguing that the profit motive - far from leading to duplicity and dis ingenuity, leads people to perform more effectively and honestly.

Section II - "Voluntary Interaction and Self-Interest" - contains essays celebrating capitalism's ability to channel people's self-interest into social benefits. (I gain most when I provide products and services that others value, etc.) Chinese economist Mao Yushi writes about the "paradox of morality" - the idea that society functions best and most cohesively when we all a bit self-interested. Philosopher David Kelley writes in defense of rational self-interest as the most moral guide of our action.

Section III - "The Production and Distribution of Wealth" - has essays dealing with how markets distribute wealth. Commonly, we speak about the market as a thing that distributes wealth and thus, it can distribute justly or unjustly. But the market isn't a thing, but a process of millions of people interacting with each other, deciding where to spend their money, what goods to create, and what goods to buy. Economist Ludwig Lachmann's essay is concerned with dispelling the idea that that market simply perpetuates status-quo distributions. But, he notes, the market is not a fixed distributor, but a dynamic process, where people rise and fall in income over time more often than not. African political scientist Temba Nolutshunga writes about the positive benefits for the poor that African and other countries have witnessed once they liberalize their markets. Why is this? Because capitalism revolves not around exploitation so much as mutual gains from trade: someone can only get rich by trading with others. You can only "exploit" me if I decide to trade what you want from me for what I want from you. And this, way more often than not, benefits both parties, and even those outside of the transaction.

Lastly, section IV - "Globalizing Capitalism" - is a brief set of essays about the virtues of globalization. Novelist Mario Vargas Llosa writes to dispel the myth that globalization destroys local cultures, by pointing out what should have been obvious: first, capitalism doesn't compel anything that people don't want, and secondly, it is a myth to think that cultures are tings that don't change over time ALL the time. Nobel economist Vernon Smith writes about the culmination of lab research he and others have done about markets, noting that the larger the market, the better everyone in it tends to do. He suggests that 'outsourcing' is not the evil thing we think it is, but is simply a form of market specialization where those who can produce x more cheaply and efficiently (good for consumers) do so, freeing up others to produce what THEY produce most effectively (again, good for consumers).

All in all, I very much enjoyed this very thorough and easy-reading collection. Not all the authors agree on all things and I found a few things here and there to disagree with (David Kelley's arguments for one, as I am not a fan of Ayn Rand and find her, and him, inconsistent at times). Some essays are a bit more academic and "dense" than others, but I wouldn't say any of them is a terribly hard read.

This is a great collection for college students who want to explore the "other side" of the arguments they likely often hear about capitalism. (The book ends with a short bibliography of other recommended readings.) For the price, and the quality, I wholeheartedly recommend it to others.

This little book by Tom G. Palmer is a compilation of essays by authors from around the globe. Each one was a fascinating read. I recommend this book to everyone--particularly to those who want more information on how to articulate the benefits of capitalism for themselves as well as others. Today we are facing many challenges to free market capitalism--crushing regulations and confiscatory taxes, government dependency by crony capitalists and more and people who have decided that it is their right to demand others take care of them, and leaders who constantly tell us by their words and actions that "they know best." The messages in this book provide a rebuttal to all of these situations and misconceptions.

For the mature and serious manager a must-have skills in a must-have book

One of the most important skills in a manager's arsenal today is the ability to marshal organizational resources effectively and efficiently to effect competitive advantage or respond to competitive threats in the environment. Among the most important assets at manager's disposal are the myriad business activities that actually describe and allow the business to do what it does--call these activities business processes or work system. But whatever you term them the astute manager has an excellent understanding of those activities and how they may be shifted like pieces on a chessboard as required.

In this technology enabled and globally distributed world many of a businesses processes are enshrined in silicon, either as off-the-shelf software components in stand-alone products or more often in enterprise software like ERPs and CRMs. Those processes that truly provide unique competitive advantage are often the processes that are the customer built and configured for the firm. In either case in order to identify, configure or implement and manage these software instantiations of a firms special way of doing things or special capabilities a manager needs to recognize and describe his firms business activities.

One common error managers make is to assume that the act of knowing and describing critical interactions between the organization and its customers and other stakeholders can be safely left to others, often to technologists or consultants. DUMB, dumb, dumb.... But until recently there has been no clear, transparent and relatively transparent way to understand, describe (model) these "Work Systems".

Business processes are embedded in larger intentional systems of activities something Alter calls Work Systems. A work system is a system in which human participants and/or machines perform processes and activities using information and technology to produce products and services for internal and/or external customers. A work system's goal is to provide value for its customers. Almost all current work systems are IT-reliant. Thus, work systems typically rely on IT but are not themselves IT systems. For instance an ERP is not a work system.

Given that the astute manager knows that productivity gains may be acquired via various forms of automation, that same manager will be constantly looking for ways to deploy technology to make the doing of work more effective and efficient. If that manager understands and can describe the system he wishes to automate stands a much better chance, when working with IT staff or consultants, to get the desired result.

In my view Alter's "Work Systems Method" is an incredibly useful tool for any manager. It is intuitive, it relies on concepts and ideas known to managers and it does not require learning new software or modeling conventions to put a useful model together.

This book, is not an exciting read; it was intended to be functional and instructive. But it is a clear, descriptive and useful read. In my opinion the manager who reads, tries and experiences the method will be changed have enhanced skills that in are bankable. Mastering this technique makes any manager more competitive with an edge over the competition. In the current economy knowing how to model a work system adds real meat to a resume.

I use the book, I teach from it and I see how it plays out in real companies...both small and Fortune 100 large-and in manager's careers. In my view it is a "must have" for any manager seeking an edge in his own career or for her own firm.

I had to by this book for a class my sophomore year of college and it's the only book I actually wanted to keep. I used the method for several other projects in school and during my internships and impressed the heck out of my teachers and bosses. Little did they know that this book was the secret to my success.

Review: A Friend In Me

Good morning book nerds! It's a fabulous Friday, and today I am talking about Pamela Havey Lau's book A Friend in Me. This is a book that focuses on bridging the generational gap between young women, and older women of the Christian faith.

I must say that in starting this book, I was quite skeptical. As a young women in the church, I have heard many spoken ideas on generational mentorship, but have not seen much action (other than my mother and mother-in-law with me—they break the mold). So, I came to this with an idea of what I was going to get, and was pleasantly surprised that what I got exceeded my expectations immensely.

IMG_8245Lau's voice is clear, and her passion for this generational connection is a hungry sort of authorship. She hits both generations problems with the other beautifully, and more than that—accurately. She doesn't just scold the younger generation for a lack of respect and morality, and she doesn't just praise older women for the moral high ground and maturity. I also would 100 percent agree with her that the younger women long to connect on a very personal level without the fear of being a huge disappointment to those of the older generations.

She addresses the phantom closeness that social media provides for those of BOTH generations, and the need for us to truly connect. Social media provides such a false sense of relationship, when most of us are lonelier than ever. She addresses judgment, humility, and other barriers that inhibit genuine relationship.

BUT what I love the most is two things: First, she is genuine. She is from the gate an honest author that shares personal experience verses lofty ideas or conjectures. Second, she provides practical solutions! PRAISE JESUS! There are easy to understand truths, and achievable actions to follow in gaining safety in generational relationships.

She addresses tone of voice, forgiveness, praying with pure motives, getting help when we don't understand the situation fully, prayer, and divine comfort. Her premise from the beginning is to show "Christ's extraordinary love," and to do that by the way we chose to "change the way we are relating."

Lovely read people. I would encourage anyone (spiritually young or old) to read this, and ask God to help you have an open heart. How can we relate? How can we bridge this gap?

"Gone is the myth of the superwoman"

The bottom line in this book: Women need each other, especially in cross-generational connections. Pam Lau makes a strong case for need of deep, Christ-centered female relationships without the judgement, preaching, or condemning. This is a fabulous book with honest insight about the realities of what is lacking in personal female-to-female friendships, why there is distance between the older and younger generations, and the dire desire for real closeness. In this age of watching each other do our lives from the safety of social media, the disconnection leaves younger women wandering through life with questions, uncertainties, and misconceptions about what real-life looks and feels like, which can sometimes lead to devastating life choices/changes. Lau challenges that if we come alongside one another--DO life together--the connection between lives offers hope, understanding, and a chance to not only survive life's challenges but to find redemption and restoration in the shattered parts.

Using Biblical references and personal experience from her own friendships, her own life-story, and her encounters with women from all over the nation, Lau lays out practical guidance on HOW to be refuge for one another. From the toughest conversations about sex, divorce and abortion to general everyday encouragement Lau teaches how to engage with each other without judgement or the need to "fix" what's wrong. I especially appreciated the specific focus on how to be comforting, compassionate, understanding, and forgiving. I know I need to be these things, but often I am not sure how.

No woman needs to be doing life alone. That isn't what God intended. Read this book to learn why and to learn how to seize the opportunity to show the love of God IN the lives the younger women.

I love Pam's book

I love Pam's book. It opened my eyes to my role as mentor to the generations of young Christian women behind me, and also caused me to view my relationship with my college-age daughter with fresh eyes and a new perspective. It is a rare book that spurs me to take quick action -- but Pam's book did. I also appreciate the theme in the book that to be a good mentor and a safe haven for other women I must first clean my own "house" and be settled in my walk with God. Well done Pam!

Ara Grigorian's GAME OF LOVE is one beautifully written novel

Ara Grigorian's GAME OF LOVE is one beautifully written novel! With the world of high stakes professional tennis as its backdrop, this story of new love takes on the friends, the coach, the press, the public, and the competition! I really enjoyed the smart dialog, the humor, the interesting plot twists, and the rich details of the world of tennis. With its multi-dimensional lovable characters, the reader can't help but fall in love with GAME OF LOVE!

Grigorian aces with his compelling debut

It’s hard to believe this is Ara Grigorian's first novel. On the page, he seems a seasoned romance author, not to mention a keen observer of the human condition. The heroine, A-List celebrity and tennis pro Gemma Lennon, usually dominates opponents on the court, but she shrinks from the paparazzi’s same aggressive style in her off-court life. The hero, Dr. Andre Reyes, is a wunderkind, whose relentless drive to cash in on his extraordinary intellectual abilities is giving him migraines, yet he’s got the emotional maturity and equanimity of a Jedi Master. Though Gemma and Andre have each garnered the wealth their talents command, what draws them together is the loneliness each feels at the eye of their respective storms. Her gift is physical and his mental, but they understand one another as few others in their worlds can.

Furthermore, placing their compelling romantic arc against the backdrop of the high-stakes world of top-tier professional tennis and the natural beauty of Malibu’s beaches gives the reader a first-class ticket to escapism. Adding to the pleasure of the read, Grigorian has artfully selected famous quotes that not only support each chapter’s theme, but are also a joy to read on their own.

I predict a great deal of success for this accomplished debut, and genuine clamor for Grigorian’s next release.

Classy, Well Written, Thought Provking and Entertaining!

Game of Love by Ara Grigorian is a 2015 Curiosity Quills publication.

When I noticed this book was listed in both Contemporary romance and New Adult, I almost passed on it because, for too many reasons to list here, I am really burned out on New Adult at the moment. However, I have reviewed books for Curiosity Quills in the past and have been impressed with their quality of books, so I decided to give this one the benefit of the doubt.

Well, as it turns out not all New Adult books are created equal....

Gemma is a star Tennis pro struggling with life in the fast lane of fame and fortune. She is determined to make her late father proud and reach her ultimate personal goal of winning a grand slam at Wimbledon. But, some personal and embarrassing setbacks is making it hard for Gemma to focus, especially when everyone wants a piece of her.

The tabloids can't get enough, always speculating on her love life, her manager only sees her as a cash cow, and her best friend and assistant often gets pressured by both sides. Her life is lived out in front of the camera's eye, but it's all staged. No one seems to know the real Gemma, nor do they seem to care.

“It is dangerous to let the public behind the scenes. They are easily disillusioned and they are angry with you, for it was the illusion they loved.” ( W. Somerset Maugham)

But, when Gemma has a chance meeting with whiz kid, Andre, a young man on the verge of financial security once he completes his current project, the two realize they have a lot in common. The difference is, Andre doesn't have to live his life in the public eye and Gemma does. That doesn't mean he is under any less pressure to do things he is uncomfortable doing, or that he doesn't have people surrounding him who only have their own best interest at heart, because he is.

However, Andre can't wrap his head around Gemma's lifestyle and her intense need to keep their relationship a secret. But, Andre is beginning to lose patience with Gemma and before it's all said and done, she will have to make a choice. Will she chose tennis, endorsements, movie deals, with all the trappings of fame and money? or will she chose love and a slower paced lifestyle with Andre?

The author did a fantastic job of depicting the life of a young tennis star. Not only is there pressure to win, but, shady and seedy people surround them often putting them into adult situations they are too young to handle or turning them into a celebrity instead of letting focus on being an athlete. Gemma was pulled in all sorts of directions and no one ever came to her rescue or really cared what was best for her personally, until Andre came into her life. But, by that time, Gemma was so jaded and paranoid, she couldn't stop living in the loop she was so accustomed to.

Andre was my kind of book hero. He too had money, success, and was driven, he was pressured and overworked, taken advantage of, just like Gemma, but he did have a stabilizing influence in his life once, who taught him that not everything worthwhile in life can be bought and paid for. So, Andre is able to see things in a way Gemma is not. I loved how Andre was a super intelligent guy, not some muscle bound alpha male, but sexy in his own way. Yet, he pulls out all the stops, isn't shy with the grand gestures, which makes him the perfect leading man.

Gemma admires Andre for who he is on the inside as he becomes the only rock she has to lean on, the only person she can put all her trust in. The battle is not an easily fought one, especially for Gemma, who still has a lot of growing up to do before she realizes how important Andre is to her and can begin to put things in their proper perspective.

The characters are well drawn, the pace is even, and the author kept me interested and engaged in the story. Even though the characters are very young and they do act their age, which will make them relatable to the NA audience, they are not the self absorbed, extremely immature characters I see so often in this genre, but they are very easy to care for, become angry on their behave, worry about, and at times become frustrated with. Also, the dialogue is believable, and thankfully free of too many “colorful metaphors” , and the sexual content is handled very tastefully, which is a refreshing change of pace.

As a big fan of quotes, I enjoyed the ones the author used to start off each chapter. The book is very classy, well written, thought provoking and entertaining. Very well done!

The best book ever for writers!

I read this book years ago when I was just starting to write, and then loaned it out to a friend. Years later, when I began to write again, I realized that I had lost touch with the best book I'd ever read on writing and was able to find a used copy for this now-out-of-print classic. And now, upon rereading my copy, I am again overwhelmed by this man's genius. His advise is spot-on, and his way of explaining why is ALSO spot-on.
If you're a writer, buy everything this man ever wrote (only a few books)and keep them close to you when you sit down at the computer. You won't regret it.

One of the Two Best Books On Writing I've Ever Read!

I read this book in 1987. I have read a number of other books about writing, some very good, but for me, this one is one of the two best I've ever read on the subject (the other is King's "On Writing").

One of the things that this book does, as does King's, is explore not only the craft of writing (weed out adverbs, etc.) but also the emotional experience of being a writer. I frequently talk to groups about writing or teach seminars on the subject, and I always try to do the same thing for those writers that Provost did for me. I also quote the sentiment that he expresses in this book -- that "sometimes another writer will understand what the rest of the world will not." I don't think there's been a more evocative, succinct testament to the importance of fellowship...ever.

I know Provost has other books on the topic, and they are surely good, and recommended. But don't pass this one up. It's got game.

Should be on every writer's bookcase!

I'm a fan of Gary Provost. I love his conversational writing style. He says things in a way that makes them easy to grasp and apply to your own writing. This book was written in the 1980s but all of it still applies to writing today. The title alone is a lesson--Make Every Word Count. And he goes on to teach you exactly how to do that. His explanation of writing that works made me rethink my approach to writing. he has a section called "If The Writer is Seen at Work, The Writing Won't Work" that really made me understand that issue in writing. He sets out to communicate and he does a brilliant job doing that. He doesn't make writing obscure or difficult. He clarifies how to do it and do it well. I definitely recommend this book to all writers at any level of their careers. There are many gems in it worth discovering.

Jerked was a thrillingly good ride that offers something different to lovers of Stepbrother Romances.
This was my first time read by this author as well as my first ARC. The blurb had me take notice from the start. With the suggestion of half naked man and Mafia families at war, its a safe bet to say I'm intrigued, however my last Step Romance left me with the a bad taste of disappointment, so some of my excitement got mixed in with nervousness.

The story of Jerked is centred around Brenna and Colin. Brenna is the Irish Mafia princess and Colin is the No.2 man to her mob boss Dad. I need to point out that these two are not actual Step siblings, Brenna dad has always treated Colin like a son so they have a more pseudo Step relationship than any parent marriage linking them.

Brenna has been long absent from her family after leaving for college. While away she starts a disastrous relationship with an Italian mobster whom she now finds herself running from. When she returns home to safety, she straight away runs into a freshly showered and half naked Colin, who soon informs her that he's to be her white knight and protector.

Now my lovely hottie Colin was the highlight of Jerked. You may be thinking an Irish mob hero to be a hard and arrogant ass, but not my wonderful Colin. This man maybe cocky about his cock but he knows how to respect a woman and his determination when going after Brenna and the bad guys was sexy and powerful.

This wasn't as gritty as you may expect from a mob romance but for me personally, I was good with that. The fast paced story provide plenty to keep me interested and even though the characters weren't Step siblings there was a nice twist that builds up the angst of" we shouldn't be doing this".

For most part l loved Jerked and would definitely recommend it to others, but it wasn't perfect.
I found Brenna generally likeable. She was a bit spoilt at time but I liked her strength and sass, but if I'm honest I didn't completely understanding her. This may just be me, but I didn't fully get where she'd been all these years or why she'd stayed away so long. My second issue with her was her lack of common sense. At one point in the story because of poor decision making she nearly gets hurt badly. While she's asking herself why these bad thing keep happening to her, I actually shouted aloud, to others confusion,
" Its because you keep doing stupid things."
On the positive side of her making mistake, it did help to push the story forward so its not all bad.(especially in the car with its quick reclining seats.)

I've got a lot of enthusiasm for this story. I think anyone who loves Stepbrother Romances will want to one click buy this and for those who don't, Jerked may pleasantly surprise them.
I've been entertained from start to finish reading this. I loved the light mobster feel, it didn't have any horrid parents and the sexy times satisfied my need for naughty. Jerked may of been my first book by this author but it won't be my last (less)

I totally enjoyed this highly erotic tale

I totally enjoyed this highly erotic tale. The writing is so lush and expressive that I could picture every move that Colin made, feel every heartbeat and breath from Brenna and Colin’s encounters and revel in the joy felt by these two at finally being free to love each other and to be together.

This stepbrother romance is a very different and unusual one. Colin is Breanna’s father protégé and his future adopted son, not legally yet. He is arrogant, dominant and cocky. Breanna has run away from her psycho ex and returns back home to safety. Her father asks Colin to protect her from her ex who’s been stalking and terrorizing her. Breanna, being the Irish Mafia princess, is in serious danger and Colin takes seriously his role as her security guard.

Breanna has always had a crush on him and now it’s even more difficult to resist him. And, these feelings are mutual. They spend most of the time together and she finds it more and more impossible to resist his sexiness, attractiveness and alphaness. Their chemistry is explosive and Colin cannot resist her, either. Collin is the man she needs and he offers her more than his protection, for many…hot nights! His intentions are simple… to leave nothing untouched on her, to use every method he has at his disposal, every trick in the damn book to have her under him screaming his name over and over.

Great plot and lots of hot and steamy scenes with the hot and sexy Colin. The story is exciting, thrilling, erotic, romantic, sensual and sexy. I believe that the dialogue could be better written and more profound. The characters are captivating and engaging. Beautiful angry girl trying to escape her cheater, psycho ex-check! Heated attraction and forbidden love-check! Recommend it-check!

INTERESTING, SUSPENSEFUL STORY WHICH WOULD BENEFIT FROM EDITING

JERKED has a premise which is interesting as well as exciting, despite its predictability. Brenna, the 24 year-old daughter of a Philly Irish mob boss, returns to the fold to escape complications of her life in NYC (no spoilers here!). Upon returning to her father's home, she runs right smack into the one who got away, Colin, who is now her father's second-in-command. When her problems follow her to Philly, Brenna is ambivalent about her father's determination that Colin become her protector and move into her home to do it. The attraction which existed years before between Brenna and Colin returns in full force, and the suspense regarding the dangers facing Brenna, the complicated romance of which Brenna's father is unaware, and dad's plans to legally adopt Colin as his heir provide the three conjoined main conflicts of the story.

Ms. Hamel has given us likeable characters whom we want to route for, as well as a balance of tension and humor in their relationships. The story would have benefitted greatly from less cliche; there are dozens of over-sexed comments, and the characters are presented as largely one-dimensional and single-minded. The sex scenes, and there are many, basically repeat the same actions; the syntax also abuses word choice repeatedly. One of the sex scenes referred more than a dozen times to how the characters "worked" over each others' various body parts. There was also a great deal of shoulder shrugging, grinning, and many other repetitively used verbs to describe the same basic mechanics by the characters, rather than a variety of physical descriptions and body motions. In addition, more attention paid to grammar and punctuation would have enhanced story quality.

Since I read an advance review copy, there may have been revisions and edits which addressed the above (Colin's 'white beater,' for example, should have been his 'wife beater'). A good edit would have been able to take the author's interesting premise and likeable characters' potential and develop them into a 4-star story. Ms. Hamel clearly writes with joy, and the reader can sense her regard for her characters; these factors encourage me to look forward to her next story!
