About the Author
Chris Weston is a professional nature photographer and writer. He has written 25 books on photography including Creative DSLR Photography and Nature Photography, published by Focal Press. His work has been featured in the Sunday Times, the Times, the Telegraph, the Guardian, the Mail Online, and his clients include the BBC, ITV and National Geographic. In 2010 he was described by Outdoor Photography magazine as one of the "World’s 40 Most Influential" nature photographers. Chris is an experienced photographic teacher and lecturer, running photographic seminars, short courses and on-location workshops. He has embraced the convergence between stills and moving images and time-lapse is a key area of his portfolio.

Speeding Things Up

Most photographers have a little familiarity with time-lapse photography, which is how nature TV shows speed up plant growth. The title sequence in "House of Cards" on Netflix is shot with time-lapse. The movie "The Martian" uses time-lapse sequences to show frantic activity. Many digital single lens reflex cameras now include the capability under the interval timer menu, which allows photographs to be taken every couple of seconds and then used to create a fast-motion video. Chris Weston's book is a fair, if not perfect, introduction to the practice.
The chapters include choosing a subject; equipment; setting up; light, design and communication: the art of composition; creating a time-lapse sequence; post-production; and technique for advanced storytelling. The book is profusely illustrated, but photographs don't do a good job of illustrating a moving picture. Under Weston's guidance, and with the help of one's camera manual and a sturdy tripod, one can probably figure out how to shoot a simple time-lapse sequence in daylight, like the clouds going by, or traffic on a street. Unfortunately, for anything more complex than that, and especially for the so-called Holy Grail shots of sunrise and sunset, the author is a little light.
Photographers willing to assay time lapse photography are likely to have already developed basic skills, but Weston devotes a great deal of the book to fundamentals of technique, like exposure and dynamic range, and less to what one has to do differently or additionally to capture time lapse images. When it comes to camera settings, he provides a generic instruction, when an illustration using the actual menus from a DSLR would have been better.
When it comes to shooting under changing lighting conditions, like sunrise, he suggests using a sophisticated intervelometer and predicting the changing light. Most photographers I know manually adjust the exposure during the shoot and then use software like LRTimelapse, in conjunction with Lightroom, to smooth out the variations created when the exposure changes.
There are numerous areas where he fails to cover small details that affect the time-lapse product. He regular talks about creating videos at 25 frames per second, which is the European standard, but never mentions that the American standard is 30 frames per second (or actually 29.97 FPS). His discussion of software to process the video that is finally created mentions Adobe Premiere Pro but not Adobe Premiere Elements, which is more than adequate, and cheaper, for most photographers. There are web sites for displaying time-lapse videos like YouTube and Vimeo but little discussion of tailoring images for these sites. A tool much beloved by experienced time-lapse photographers is the slider, which Weston mentions, but the use of which is never explained.
Time-lapse photography is a sophisticated technique, and at least at the present time, requires specialized camera technique and moving back and forth between several different kinds of software to create an effective video. There is no single book that explains all of the artistic and technical issues involved. This book is a fair introduction, but by no means comprehensive. On the other hand, if time-lapse photography were easy, everybody might be doing it.

Useful for still photographers too

Since time-lapse photography results from compiling a large number of still photos into a video clip, it should not be surprising that much of this book is dedicated to topics typically included in other photography books. The chapter on equipment includes information not only on camera bodies, lenses, and filters, but also on specialized tools, such as intervalometers, dollies, sliders, and external power supplies.
Chapter 3 provides guidance on the relative merits of RAW and compressed (jpeg) files, pixel size versus number of pixels, and auto versus preset white balance settings. It includes an in-depth discussion of why the recommendation to “expose to the right” is valid. The advantages of different metering modes are presented.
Chapter 4 is a short, but useful, guide on composition. It includes graphic examples of why some photos are more effective than others. A number of examples of why a number of compositional “rules” are used are provided, together with explanations of when it may be advantageous to ignore those rules.
Chapter 5 includes a number of topics of interest to time-lapse photography novices. Recommendations on useful interval times for different subjects and the selection of appropriate depth of field are included. The challenge of obtaining an exposure throughout a video produced at sunrise/sunset is discussed.
Chapters 6 and 7 provide guidance for those just beginning to explore time-lapse photography. These chapters include software that is used to correct inconsistencies among the individual photos, to create time-lapse videos from those photos, and to combine multiple clips and add sound to produce the final film.
My main complaint about the book is that editing and proofreading was not consistent throughout the book. Some chapters contain references to non-existent notes or tables, incorrect references to page numbers, incorrect captions on photos, or photo sequences that appear to be incorrectly ordered. Although the number of these occurrences is small, they detract from the overall quality of this book.
In my opinion, inclusion of a description of lighting conditions associated with the EV values provided in the table on page 126 could have made this table more meaningful. The table providing neutral density filter markings (page 41) could have included all three of the common notations for these filters without increasing the size the table.
Despite these reservations, Chris Weston’s book is a valuable resource for those considering time-lapse photography and those seeking a different perspective on still photography.
