not the usual kind of murder mystery
By Vanya Petkova
NOTE: I received an eARC of this book from the blog tour organizer, Xpresso Book Tours.

I've been on a teen murder mystery streak for the past month, so when I saw this title pop up, I thought 'Awesome!' It didn't turn out to be a masterpiece, but it wasn't abysmal either, so I'll go for average and you can read my dissection below.

Writing style:
It definitely needed to be polished and proofread. There were scenes that could've been written better, more fluently.

Story line:
Charming started out slow and the story seemed to turn from the murder mystery I was advertised in the synopsis, to a story of parental abuse. I did not enjoy that first half of the book at all. Reading about Haley getting both verbally and physically abused by her own father almost had me putting the novel away. But then strange things started happening so I decided to stick around. When weird things started happening, I finally thought that the book was redeemable.

Themes:
-parental abuse
-sibling love
-keeping secrets & the consequences of that
-friendships
-psychological perversion

Characters:
Haley was one strong, but exceptionally confused girl. After her mom died in a car crash, she had no one to count on, no one to seek advice from. Her father beat her and abused her verbally all the time just because she'd taken her looks from her mom. I don't think I liked her reasoning much. She was only in high school, but she was playing the mother bird for her sister and grandma and sickly enough, her father. Things would've been so much better if she used that head on her shoulders differently.

Joselyn, Haley's little sister, needed someone to sit down and talk to her, or better yet, slap her. Being the lazy sibling, she had no right to talk down to Haley. She wasn't so young that she wouldn't understand what was happening with her dad or sister, but she seemed to willingly close her eyes to the abuse that Haley went through on a daily basis.

Chris Charming came out of nowhere, was too good to be true, and fit the mold of the knight in shining armor to the dot. I'm not entirely sure I liked him all that much. He seemed too well moulded to fit the author's needs instead of having him be his own character.

Christine was Haley's best and only friend who could be counted on for all things. Having a history of her own, she was still the most loveable character of the lot. Except from her smoking pot, that is.

In conclusion:
If you're looking for a fast-pace murder mystery, this book isn't for you. If you're looking for a sweet romance, this book isn't for you either. However, if you're looking for a slow development of both, then you may be in for it.

❦❦❦❦- 4 Floral Hearts! - We've Fallen and There's No Going Back!

THE STORY:
Haley had everything a girl could want: a prestigious school, a great family, and a bright future at her fingertips. But then an accident with a drunk drive tore her family apart, leaving her slowly falling apart. Chris has everything a guy could want: a top school, a CEO for a father, and a fortune within his grasp. But when false rumor paint him as the town bad boy, he begins questioning what he really wants. Both Haley and Chris want someone to notice what's really going on behind the scenes, and they happen to find that person in each other. While they are starting to get to really know each other, a serial killer is on the loose, and for some unknown reason is pushing them to be together. Can they survive long enough to have a future together?

THE COUPLE:
Haley and Chris both went to the same private school until Haley transferred out after the accident that killed her mother. Haley has a lot to deal with with an alcoholic and abusive father and a sister who refuses to see the truth, so Chris' attention is unwanted but he's persistent. I loved how these two people who are both hiding something from the rest of the world, but also desperate for someone to notice what's going wrong, find in each other someone who can truly understand what they're going through. I also liked how their relationship wasn't one of those instant things. Haley was always running away from Chris whenever he would try to talk to her, and a lot of the time I felt kind of sorry for him, but I could also understand Haley's reasons for pushing him away. Then there is the serial killer who is trying to push them together for his own reason - this is where a lot of the scary stuff comes in. But couple wise, I thought that these two could offer each other an understanding and support that others may not be able to provide. It's just that dynamic that I really liked with Haley and Chris.

THE ROMANCE:
Charming is a loose retelling of Cinderella meets Saw, so there is a lot more scariness than romance. But the little bit of romance within all of the bad stuff just makes it that more powerful. Haley and Chris find in each other exactly what they have needed in their lives for a while now, and just the hope that they will survive this crazy psycho killer is just one of the things that kept me reading the book. I desperately wanted everything to work out between them. Some scenes that I really liked were the dance scene, even though I felt sorry for Chris during the scenes where Haley is running away from him they are also kind of funny too, and even though Chris went kind of macho caveman in this scene I liked the porch scene with Niles, Haley's ex-boyfriend. There is just so much greatness in this book - the romance, some laughs, the scary psycho-ness, and also the very serious topic of abuse in its many forms (physical, substances, etc.) So there really is a little of everything for readers.

By Vik BookLover
There really is no other way to describe this but as a retelling of a Cinderally if she took some hallucinogens and ended up in Saw franchise.

No seriously. Although the story is told of our “Cinderella” as a HS sophomore there is a lot of adult content such has dealing with abuse. If anythingn this story reflects much of the original Brothers Grimm story of Cinderella in the gore and messing with your head factor. In the original story there is actual cutting/trimming of feet to get into that slipper. I’m serious look it up. That is REAL!

As for this story our “Cinderella” is Haley… our poor girl in her teenage nativity takes on something that even as adults we have a hard time processing. She takes on abuse from her alcoholic father in order to shield her younger sister to honor her dying mother’s wish to shield her.

As I kept reading it all I wanted to do was hug the poor Haley. I mean honestly her life S-U-C-K-S.

Her days spent wasting her youth years being the adult and a punching bag at home and visiting her dead mother at the grave.

If that is not enough on top of it all she has a stalker who took it upon himself the role of a Demented Fairy Godmother. Punishing those who wronged her and “giving” her to Prince Charming.

Aaah Prince Charming… or shall we say Chris Charming… A boy who was always meant to be in her life. A life that was mean to happen if it weren’t for the horrible accident that took her mother away and put her in this path of life destruction.

Fortunately, there is a rainbow at the end of this tragic story… a determined girl with a gang of helpful, supporting cast to help… but can they take on the darkness that surrounds her? Well read on and get your answer.
For a YA book there is a lot of blood and gore and violence that made my tummy ache… And like a true sicko I loved every second of it. The author did a fantastic job of retelling the old classic and making it her own. In my age (non-teen age that is) I find it hard relating to issues of HS drama but this story went so much more. A nice bloody horror story.

I’m glad I went outside my comfort zone for this.
