In Search of Planet Vulcan: The Ghost in Newton's Clockwork Universe, by Richard P Baum, William Sheehan

Presented for the first time in popular form is the fascinating true story of the search for the phantom planet Vulcan. As with legends of "the lost continent of Atlantis," scientists and dreamers alike have sought to prove that Vulcan is more than just a myth. Historians of astronomy Richard Baum and William Sheehan have combed the continents, digging through dusty letters and journals, to unravel this mysterious and captivating tale. The planet first assumed a shadowy reality against a backdrop of war and revolution early in the nineteenth century. Le Verrier, the autocratic Director of the Paris Observatory, had unveiled a problem with the motion of the planet Mercury. The indications were of a planet closer to the sun than Mercury. Incredibly, the prediction was immediately fulfilled by an obscure French country doctor using no more than a homemade telescope. The planet, named for the Roman god of fire, was no sooner discovered than it was lost. Still it reappeared often enough to tantalize even skeptics into considering its shadowy existence possible. This fast-paced tale follows the exploits of Le Verrier, and later of his followers, in a pursuit of his unbridled obsessions: to extend the universality of Newton's Laws, to prove Vulcan's existence, and to secure his place in history as one of the greatest astronomers of his time. Stranger than fiction, the story reaches an exciting climax in the final showdown in the unlikeliest of places: America's Wild West. Like gunslingers at high noon, determined astronomers of the opposing camps brave Indians and the elements in their attempt to prove once and for all whether the planet exists. They congregate with some of the most illustrious names of their time for the final test: a grand eclipse of the sun.

Amazon.com Review
Today every schoolchild learns that our solar system contains nine planets in orbit around the sun--plus a variety of other bodies such as asteroids--but as Richard Baum and William Sheehan describe in In Search of Planet Vulcan, the discovery of these facts was far from straightforward. In a book rich with historical anecdotes, Baum and Sheehan depict centuries of efforts to enumerate the inhabitants of our solar system. In some cases the successes are stunning proof of the veracity of Newtonian mechanics; in others, such as the quest for a hypothetical planet "Vulcan" orbiting well inside Mercury, the fallacies and failures are equally staggering.

From Booklist
Before it spawned Spock, the "planet" Vulcan was proposed to orbit inside Mercury to account for a chronic deviation in Mercury's predicted orbit. When amateur astronomer Edmond Lescarbault claimed to see the culprit, case closed, right? But try as they might, no one else could observe the fugitive; still, theoretically, its existence suited world-class mathematician Urbain Jean Joseph Le Verrier, so he offered proof. A curiosity in the history of astronomy, the case demonstrates how a scientific authority can get the whole world barking up the wrong tree. Baum and Sheehan readably recount how Le Verrier made his name by explaining perturbations in Uranus' orbit in terms of an unknown planet, duly discovered as Neptune in 1846. The authors give a merry rendition of astronomers tramping to solar eclipses to glimpse Vulcan, the repeated futility of which finished it off, but the problem of Mercury's orbit persisted. Einstein eventually solved it: a curvature of space-time, not a planet, explained Mercury's orbit. Enjoyable recreational reading for astro-buffs. Gilbert Taylor

Interesting History of Planetary Astronomy
By George Poirier
In this very engaging book, the authors recount the history of the planetary astronomy of our solar system, focusing mainly on the search for planet Vulcan – a hypothetical planet that was thought to be located between Mercury and the Sun. The existence of such a planet was proposed in order to account for the anomalous advance of Mercury’s perihelion – an advance that was not entirely accounted for by the perturbative effects of the known planets.

Starting with ancient Greek ideas, the story progresses swiftly through the contributions of Ptolemy, Copernicus, Kepler and especially Newton to more detailed examination of the successes of Le Verrier and Adams in discovering Neptune from a strictly theoretical (Newtonian mechanics) point of view, subsequently confirmed by direct observation. The contemplations about the possible existence of Vulcan begin about half way through the book. Despite Einstein’s resolution of the problem through General Relativity, the authors illustrate how the Vulcan hypothesis was slow to die away.

Before reading this book, I was reasonably acquainted with the Vulcan story. However, I was not familiar with the level of detail provided in this book. I found the prose to be clear, lively and often quite captivating. Although I believe that his book could be enjoyed by anyone, I suspect that readers with an interest in planetary astronomy will appreciate it the most, especially if they are familiar with basic astronomical terminology.

Another home run by Sheehan...
By John Rummel
Another gem of a book by William Sheehan, joined in this venture by astronomer Richard Baum. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Newton's theory of universal gravitation had enjoyed some incredible triumphs, and stood as a monument to the mathematization of science. Three thorny problems remained however, to disrupt the harmony of Newton's universe: the motion of the moon, Mercury, and Uranus. Sheehan and Baum tell the amazing tale of mathematics and astronomy in their pursuit of the answers to these puzzles. This book is a must-read for any buff of astronomy history - Newton, Horrocks, Clairaut, Laplace, Lagrange, and so on. Considerable time is given to the discovery of Neptune, first on paper by Adams and Le Verrier, and by Galle at the telescope. Sheehan and Baum's retelling of his historic tale is even better documented than Grosser's book on the subject. Finally, the problem of the shift in Mercury's orbit. The pressure to find a Newtonian solution was immense, given the previous victories obtained using Newtonian mechanics. Le Verrier was susceptible to this pressure, owing at least in part to his previous success with Neptune. However, this problem resisted even Newton, and was not finally solved until Einstein's theory of gravity supplanted Newton's early in the 20th century. The interwoven stories of astronomers and their diligent search for the elusive planet Vulcan are entertaining and provide a unique perspective on 19th century astronomy.

The concepts behind the discovery of the solar system
By A Customer
As an occasional naked eye astronomer I was able to follow Sheehan and Baum's work without difficulty. They provide an accessible history of the development of the concepts that lie behind the discovery of the solar system from Ptolemy to Einstein. They describe observations by astronomers but also pay attention to contributions from mathematicians without presenting the readers with a single equation. There are brief biographical asides on some of the main players (Sheehan's day job is as a psychiatrist) but the main thrust of the book is scientific.
Particular interest is shown in the (serendipitous) discovery of Uranus followed by the (predicted) discovery of Neptune. The discovery of Neptune based on the known perturbations of the orbit of Uranus. This success focussed attention on the erratic orbit of Mercury, which advances seemingly inexplicably. We now know that this apparent motion is caused by the bending of space/time by the Sun's gravity, but the authors leave this for last. At the top of the conceptual staircase we learn that when Einstein explained the advance in Mercury's orbit using Relativity he couldn't sleep for 3 days with the excitement.

Migration (Key Ideas in Geography), by Michael Samers

In the context of global security concerns, humanitarian crises and skill shortages migration and immigration have become central to economic, political and social debates at the beginning of the twenty-first century. And while migration and immigration have certainly not escaped the attention of social scientists, the study of both remains the most ‘under-serviced’ academic domain with respect to introductory texts. It is not surprising then that even fewer books have explored the contours of these social phenomena from an explicitly geographical perspective – in other words, in terms of ‘space’, ‘place’ and ‘scale’.

Migration is an advanced, yet accessible, introduction to migration and immigration in a global context. It offers a critical, multi-disciplinary approach to the subject, borrowing from human geography, political science, social anthropology and sociology. However, unlike other broad volumes on the subject, it emphasizes a theoretical and conceptual approach to the study of migration. Specifically, Migration adopts a unique geographical approach by employing spatial concepts such as place, scale and territory. Using these spatial concepts, the author argues that most studies of migration begin with either an undue emphasis on nation-states as a lens on migration or on the contrary rely on exaggerated notions of transnationalism. Migration neither neglects the importance of nation states nor the significance of transnationalism, but it focuses on how local contexts matter to migration. The book covers such topics as migration categories, the explanation of different forms of migration, migration and employment, the geopolitics of migration and immigration and citizenship, rights, and belonging.

This text is not simply an encyclopaedic overview of migration theories, trends and facts; rather, it is designed to have lasting intellectual value by providing particular arguments in each theme-based chapter. While it advocates certain arguments, it is also clearly written in an engaging and accessible manner for an undergraduate audience. Its clear structure is complemented by a combination of pedagogical features, such as case-study boxes, summary questions at the end of each chapter and a glossary. The book is designed for courses and modules on migration and immigration at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels and both students and academics will find it exceptionally useful.

Given the contemporary salience and topicality of issues around international migration, this book represents an original and critical contribution to debates. Unusually, it examines migration through an explicit engagement with spatial perspectives, yet at the same time draws upon and brings together literature from a number of different disciplines, making it an appealing and highly valuable resource for a wide and varied audience.                   Johanna L. Waters, University of Liverpool, UK

In a market dominated by texts by anthropologists, economists, political scientists, and sociologists, such a contribution is long overdue. Samers’s sensitive treatments of concepts such as the friction of distance, context, and scale cast new light on terms like transnationalism and social networks as well as on the practices that compel people to leave home to try to make a life for themselves and their families elsewhere.                Richard Wright, Dartmouth College, USA

Migration explores the local contexts shaping migrants' lives by going beyond - and beneath - the usual national statistics and transnational flows. As a conceptual roadmap to the ever-expanding migration literature, it should be essential reading for both established scholars and those new to migration studies.                                                               Deirdre McKay, Keele University

Fallen Angels: Soldiers of Satan's Realm, by Bernard J. Bamberger

Fantastic myths about the angels who were lured to sin and the proud angel who rebelled against God and was cast down as Satan. The problem of evil has challenged mankind ever since the dawn of intelligence. Why is there evil in the world and why do pain and suffering come upon those who do not seem to deserve it? Written in a simple, popular style, Bamberger’s book, first published in 1952, will appeal to anyone who, no matter what his own answer to the question may be, is curious to learn how it has been answered in the past or is being answered by others in our own age. The author traces the history of the belief in fallen angels in Judaism, Christianity and Islam, and assembles a variety of tales and superstitions— some grotesque, others quaint and humorous. His presentation also reveals a basic divergence between Judaism and Christianity in their respective attitudes toward the devil. The concluding chapter of the work deals with the return of the devil to prominence in contemporary religious thought and shows how Judaism seeks its own solution to the problem of evil. The book contains an extensive bibliography, notes, and index.

Review
"A compelling and interesting collection of scripture based and Talmudic lore . . . deftly brings readers through some of the most engaging tales. . . . Fallen Angels is very highly recommended reading, especially for students of the Abrahamic religions, including those searching for a more knowledgeable approach to Jewish traditions and teachings particularly, but to the Muslim and Christian faiths as well."—Midwest Book Review (Midwest Book Review)

Soldiers of Satan’s Realm

For thousands of years people have told stories of fallen angels, heavenly beings corrupted by pride and lust, who, in their descent, brought confusion and suffering into the world.

Fallen Angels: Soldiers of Satan’s Realm traces the history of the belief in fallen angels in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Bamberger examines the fall of Satan, the creation of Lilith, and many other intriguing myths and superstitions and explores their development as part of religious tradition, art, and philosophy.

Why is there evil in the world? Why do pain and suffering come upon those who do not seem to deserve it? Written in a clear, popular style, Bamberger’s classic book, first published in 1952, will speak to anyone who is curious to learn how these questions have been answered in the past or are being answered by others today.

History of the Dark Side
By Dov
Fallen Angels: Soldiers of Satan's Realm
by Bernard J. Bamberger

An enjoyable account of the origins and evolution of the concept of fallen angels in Jewish and Christian world views for a general audience. Bamberger starts with a brief introductory discussion of those few passages from the Tanakh (Old Testament) which are often referenced in later writings on Satan or fallen angels. But the book really gets started with those writings that Bamberger calls the "outside books." That is the books outside the canonical tradition-the Enoch writings, the Adam books, and various testaments and apocalypses. Bamberger then discusses the separate and distinct traditions that developed in Judaism and Christianity from the periods of the Talmud and the New Testament through the middle ages to contemporary theology. Contemporary, that is to the late 1940s when this book was written. Throughout the book, Bamberger is especially interested in contrasting the dualistic views of some of the outside books, the Zohar, and Christian theology which saw the Cosmos divided between warring camps of good and evil with the traditional Jewish view that sees Satan as an agent of an unopposed and unopposable God. It's unfortunate that Bamberger did not have access to the Dead Sea Scrolls. The extreme dualism of the Dead Sea Sect would have been an interesting addition to this study. I did find this book to be good preparation for approaching the duelist teachings of the Dead Sea Sect. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this book is the contrast between Jewish and Christian approaches to similar concepts. I have often heard people speak of the Judeo-Christian concept of Satan. This book makes clear that there is no such thing. If you're interested in the dark side of Jewish and Christian mythology, this is a book you will want to read.

Outstanding illustrations!
By ScienceThinker
This book is one of the greatest gifts for a child (and even grown ups who like illustrations). All illustrations extend to two pages and they are made with extreme care and attention to detail. The coloring is vivid and beautiful. It is a great disappointment if this book is available only as black and white in the ebook format (as another customer complains); in such a case, do not buy an ebook. However, even if a colored ebook is made available, I personally prefer the traditional printed book. It is larger in size than the screen of any tablet and the colors are always the same --- they do not depend on the screen or on the particular tablet used to read it.

And although I am praising the illustrations so far, the text is also worth praising. It is as close as it could be to the original and authentic stories. The author appears to have close ties with American Indians and know their traditions and values.

I have bought hundreds of illustrated books for my son. This one is probably one of the very best. I think that it deservers to be wider known and read by more people.

Will appeal to children (and their parents) age 6 and up
By Midwest Book Review
"The Earth Made New: Plains Indian Stories of Creation" is the recent offering of Caldecott Medal-winning author/artist Paul Goble, creator of "The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses," "Buffalo Woman," and "Mystic Horse." Illustrated throughout with beautiful, crisp, clean colored paintings, "The Earth Made New" tells many of the mysterious details of creation stories of the Plains Indians of North America. The text is spare but haunting, with many starred footnotes added to the pages to enrich the stories with further details or variations, each of which could be imagined to begin another whole story cycle of its own. Thus we have the feeling or effect of the presence of a true teller of the sacred tales when we hold and read "The Earth Made New." Joe Medicine Crow gives high praise in his forward, saying, "Paul Goble has done a good job of presenting the Plains Indian story of creation." "The Earth Made New" will appeal to children (and their parents) age 6 and up.
