There is a great deal of mystery around impotence and its causes and few people have tried to get to the bottom of the problem. This book is one of those that break through the wall of ignorance and present impotence for what it is, a human condition. The book explains the origins of impotence, what causes its development and what are the ways in which it can be threaten. About the Author
Peter H. Raven, Ph.D., is director of the Missouri Botanical Garden and Engelmann professor of botany at Washington University at St. Louis. He oversees the garden's internationally recognized research program in tropical botany--one of the world's most active in the study and conservation of imperiled tropical habitats. Raven's botanical research and work in the area of tropical conservation have earned him numerous honors and awards, including a MacArthur Fellowship. He has written 17 textbooks and more than 400 articles, and he is a member of th National Academy of Science and the National Research Council.

I have to say this delivered extremely quick, in excellent condition, i was happy to have this before class. I thought that since this book is brand new that it would include the access code - however it does not. I'm actually pretty irritated that it was not included, and more irritated that it is not mentioned with the product info, if I would have known this I would not have purchased this since I need the access code. I had to go to the college bookstore to purchase it with the access code. The code by itself is aprox $65, or so I was told. I dont want to go through the hassle of doing that and spending even more than what i would have gotten it at the book store.

SHOULD WE HAVE A BABY OR NOT?

Two actors, a man and a woman --M and W in the script. No set. No scene changes, conversation in stops and starts, only sometimes completely formed sentences. But isn’t that the way we talk in real life? M and W start to talk about having a baby. It’s a scary thought at first. They’re a couple but they’re not married. Having a baby is serious business: it will change their lives, their lovemaking, her body. Then there’s the mess the world is in. Is it right to bring a child into the world? W says: “I could fly to New York and back every day for seven years and still not leave a carbon footprint as big as if I have a child. … Ten thousand tonnes of CO2. That’s the weight of the Eiffel Tower. I’d be giving birth to the Eiffel Tower.” They do it any way but there’s a miscarriage. Something is broken from then on. Eventually they split. Later, they meet again. Her mother has died. (He never thought she liked him. So has his Dad. Somehow, almost inadvertently, they end up having sex before they split again. (He’s engaged now.) This time it takes. She’s pregnant, he’s engaged, the baby comes but they don’t get back together, at least not quite, and they grow old, old, old, and the world has changed: no forests any more, dust everywhere, hot, stale air, and he’s going into an old folks’ home. Lungs is a fine play and very current bin its preoccupations, not just environmental but personal, psychological, what it’s like to be young and thinking of having a child today.

Interesting read....from a manager's viewpoint, not from an engineer's

In a very easy-to-read book, Birla uses his vast experience in FedEx to outline how the philosophy of FedEx evolved and thrives on innovation. The vantage point enjoyed by the author certainly reflects in this "big picture" viewpoint of one of the better known company's growth. Of particular interest is the notion of innovation ( spelt with an "i") dealing with process improvements and Innovation (spelt with an "I") dealing with business model changes. The author provides an interesting discussion on what constitutes innovation and how FedEx defined (or didnt define) it. The rest of the book explains how a 5-dimensional employee base can be created. This discussion is certainly novel and adds some interesting perspective for anyone involved in managing people and/or processes.

Though the book will certainly please any "managerial-type" reader, I was a bit disappointed to see that the author's vast engineering experience was essentially untapped in this book. There is no meaningful discussion on the operational side of "how " FedEx actually implemented innovation....In that sense, the title is a little misleading for an engineering-minded reader. Regardless, this is an excellent read, provides a different perspective on how innovation should be seen, and a broad paradigm that enables developing an employee-base committed to and thriving on innovation. A good read. (It may be interesting to read this book along with the autobiography of Kinko's founder - "Copy This!". FedEx's buying of Kinkos is discussed in this book and for even a casual observer the synergy between these two companies seems real.)

A must read, the book is more than just about FedEx

There is not a manager or executive throughout the world who would not benefit greatly from reading this book. In only 200 pages Madan captures the very essence of what is needed by any business in order to survive and thrive in today's economy.

Through the story of FedEx he both illustrates why companies need to engender a culture of innovation and, also sets out exactly what is needed to execute on that strategy. Any negativity on the part of a reader will have more to do with their own personal doubts or fear of failure, for the ideas are sound and well illustrated.

In the work I do I spend a lot of time reading management and success books, this is one of the best that I have read in a very long time. The linkage between Strategy, People, Process and Systems is as strong as I have ever seen.

Excellent Introduction to All Facets of Image Processing

Despite its small size, this book contains a wealth of information on the field of digital image processing. Topics include color space descriptions, filtering in the spatial and Fourier domains, image registration, and classification. The topics are introduced with minimal but clear mathematics - just right for the beginner. The text is similarly concise and clear. The examples and figures in this volume are well chosen and very helpful. The questions at the end of each chapter are helpful as well for understanding the topics.
This book is a real gem for the beginning image processing student or practitioner.

One the best books of 2D Algorithms in plain english & with the maths

I bought this book back in 1993, at a cost of $237 which was exorbitant for a book back then and perhaps even now. Its a small, hardback book, written in plain English with a focus on practical algorithms with lots of examples using colour images to show the effects of an algorithm on test images.

I have an interest in the application of the Bayesian Algorithm (BA). This had a nice explanation of the concepts with an anchoring to a practical application. In this explanation the author bothers to spell out that each of the two overlapping distributions have to be independently characterized (obvious, when you know).

He introduces the fundamentals of a concept then extends the concepts (to take into account practical considerations for algorithm processing). The extension of theory for BA was to introduce parametric methods of expressing the BA relationships for data. In other words he shows how to express the probability distributions that exemplify data from the system under study, and shows how to fit distribution curves to the data (Gaussian curve for example). That way you can express a lot of data with just a few parameters needed to draw the parametric curves of each spread of data.

Overall, the production quality of the book is excellent, the algorithms are short and the explanations are very concise. The book is at the same time dense with both pictorial explanations and maths, but written very plainly and simply. It is evident from the explanations that the author has experience in practical use of the algorithms. He often points out what is practical to use. The difference is practical knowledge instead of academic knowledge.

These 2D algorithms are also useful for 1D signal processing (acoustics for example).
Lots of useful algorithm and equations. Useful as a source book of ideas and references. the book is a little outdated. For example it doesn't cover independent component analysis, Blind source separation, stochastic resonance, Elman-Jordan adaptive noise reduction techniques and compressed sensing (although to be fair it actually describes the technique but without the name which was invented around 2006 (?)).

Tales of real life soldiers of fortune

"Mercs" is a series of tiny anecdotes (usually anywhere from 3-10 pages) about various mercenaries throughout history, with a special emphasis on the twentieth century, except for the final section, which is a long long piece on mercenaries sent to start a coup in Ghana. Most of the stories range from lame to fascinating, depending on what happens. My favorite anecdotes were the ones about Sir John de Hawkwood, English condotierre in Renaissance Italy. The anecdotes that didn't hold too much of an interest to me are the ones from the mid-20th century, especially the ones in Vietnam (they just kinda blend together to me). I also thought it might have been a bit better if they included a bit more of the post-Cold War mercenaries. But all in all I would say it's a decent book.

A good overview of historical professional soldiering

There are many causes worth fighting for, but some just go without mention thanks to lack of media coverage (Biafra comes to mind). Some mercenaries do not fit the Hollywood mold of a ruthless, senseless warmonger with a thirst for blood and the next big paycheck. Some mercs are angels of mercy, sacrificing themselves for those whom it may not be "politically suitable" for other large nations (read: USA) to aid.
"Mercs" covers some of these individuals with interesting non-fiction short stories. Of particular interest to this reader were the accounts of Count Carl Gustav von Rosen, who led five modified light aircraft armed with small rocket pods on morning raids against the Nigerian Air Force (mostly MiGs), and the stories concerning the history of the French Foreign Legion.

Mercs-- A cut above the rest

This is a highly interesting collection of stories. It covers the history of merenaries from the Greeks in Persia to the modern day drug wars. This book has a definite intellectual edge to it, as the writers clearly have a decent education. If you are used to reading military stories written by veterans with little or no education (not to say the stories are not interesting) this is a refreshing, clearly written book. I enjoyed it thouroughly, and learned many things that I found both surprising and entertaining.
