Well written book on asexuality.

I myself am an aromantic asexual and can personally identify with much of this book. Its not just for those like me its also for anyone who wants to learn about asexuality. It addressed subjects ranging from common pitfalls, the asexual spectrum, misunderstandings, communitys,to being comfortable with who you are.

A Great and Useful Book for a True Beginner

As a true beginner, I found this book very useful. It gives you a "small" step on each lesson and have you master it before moving on. The music theories covered are in "incremental" steps, which are not hard for a beginner to comprehend.

I have never played piano in my life, nor have I known music scores and and theories. I have a small keyboard but never know how to play. In the past few years, I attempted to learn how to play piano by searching for resources on Internet but found the lessons on Internet were quite difficult. Early last year, I bought this book from Barnes&Nobles and started learning and going through the book myself. In several early lessons, I had to stop since I was unable to coordinate both hands together.I went back and forth with the "difficult pieces" several times. I could play the pieces separately but not with both hands. I bought other books and piano CDs but found they are even harder for me after the initial basic lessons. I also searched on Internet for piano lessons, finding them "hard" for me since my problem was to coordinate both hands. I read teacher's note on a forum saying that while playing I need to think "vertically", not "horizontally". This was enlightening, with this type of thinking, I then made it through the seeming difficult pieces one-by-one. I was on-and-off a bit throughout the year, but eventually I am now near the end, three pieces left in the book.

All I want to say that, this book is the best resource for me, a true beginner who has no knowledge of music theory and just want to explore how to play piano before spending money for lessons. The CD is helpful since it gives me an idea how the music sounds like as a whole piece. I also searched on Youtube, some people played all pieces on the book, which I found helpful. Seeing others playing the same music on the same book gives me an idea how the keys are arranged. Last month, I bought an acoustic piano and was going through all the pieces again on the book. Now, I am playing on acoustic piano and is really building on basic finger techniques by watching youtube videos.

I am still not thinking about getting a piano teacher yet; as a self-learner, I am going to watch some videos to learn various techniques. Then I will get the level 2 and level 3 books to go through all the pieces. I have to say it is this book that got me started and led me to the door of piano world.

Here I am, 40 years old and learning to play the piano. I took lessons very very briefly several years ago and have some background in reading music from my junior high band years, so I'm not completely unfamiliar with music in general - but I might as well be.

The book is excellent at covering the most basic rudiments of the piano, from posture to finger position to basic note reading in both clefs. I didn't utilize the included CD, mostly because I don't have a CD player, but I did go out to youtube to listen to a few of the songs so I could get an idea of how they should sound (which is often very different from how I play them initially).

The earliest songs in the book were pretty easy for me to play and I got bored and worked ahead ... and then stalled. Like learning anything, focusing on the basics before you move on is essential. I'm going back now and spending quality time with each piece to reinforce everything I've learned before I move on to another book.

This book includes explanatory text with each page, written exercises you can do right in the book to reinforce note reading and chord determination as well as a mountain of songs. Some of the songs are hokey beginner songs, but the later songs are delightful and I'm tickled I can now play some of them.

It's a worthwhile investment for someone thinking of taking on the piano. This will give you a good start to determine if the instrument is really for you, or to brush up if you've been away from it for many moons. I am not convinced it will replace a good teacher, but it will certainly help you determine if you are interested in making a larger investment.

fiendishly clever

This is a fiendish clever mystery, written with wit and venom. How is it that modern writers of so called cozy mysteries emulate the form without always matching the intelligence?

The book begins with a birdseye view of a charming landscape, filled primarily with British aristocrats and the community that revolves around them. At first glance all is peaceful and pretty, but with the death of an elderly Lord damning secrets begin to seep to the surface. When a murder is discovered Chief Inspector Allen is called in. Is the murder a result of of submerged political scandal or a quarrel over local fishing rights? Are there other factors at work? The murdered man is pleasant fellow of stellar character. Who could have ended his life in what turns out to be a particularly awful manner?

As with another recently read Ngiao Marsh mystery written in roughly the same stage of her career, I am struck by the singular mix of charm and intensity that seems to have arisen as Marsh developed as a writer. Her earlier books were always entertaining and well observed but around this juncture of her career she seems to have become ferocious. There are at least two mysteries from around this period that share this quality and this may be one of her best. I hope that the later Marsh books continue to be released in ebook form do that I can enjoy them. This one was a bit of a revelation.

Another great one.

As usual, I enjoyed this Marsh novel. It has all of what I love: the Brits in the 1930's-40's era, their way of life, and, of course, a murder being solved.
This is beside the point, but I had a chance to visit Ms March's home which is now a museum dedicated to her. It was thrilling!

I first read this book about two decades ago, and have never, ever forgotten the grisly method of murder used in it. It's not presented horrifically, so there's no real need to worry about nightmares, but it is absolutely unique among mysteries.

In this engrossing, panoramic history of the development of American media, Pulitzer winner Starr (The Social Transformation of American Medicine) ranges from our nation's founding, when the Constitution made the postal service the one nationalized industry and the Bill of Rights denied the federal government any role in regulating the press, to the eve of WWII, when commercial radio broadcasting flourished under very different cultural, political and economic conditions. Throughout, Starr shows that our country's original impulse to promote the postal service and press as part of its vision of nation building established a pattern of support for an open, continent-wide market that would assume different forms and policies as new waves of media were introduced. Starr brilliantly argues, however, that the government preference for keeping things decentralized was finally challenged by the advent of the telegraph, as its technology and associated economies of scale centralized the communications industry. Confronting thorny new issues of monopoly and threats to the guaranteed rights of free expression and individual privacy, the country then had no choice but to take on a regulatory role. Starr vividly demonstrates how complicated that role became with media like motion pictures and broadcasting, as the nation experienced immigration, urbanization and major cultural shifts: suddenly, counter forces in favor of moral regulation were petitioning the government to use all of its power to restrain mass media. Masterful and wise

If you're far enough on the left to hate markets, or if you're far enough on the right to hate any action by the state, this probably isn't for you. If you believe the course of the media has been shaped by a confluence of market forces and state actions, and that the result in the United States is on balance one of human advancement -- and if you've got plenty of time and patience for a long and complex yet very well-told tale -- this is for you. Especially if you've spent a career in various aspects of late 20th and early 21st century media, as I have, there's no better window into the historical forces on which our experiences were built.

Highly Recommended!

International in scope, immensely detailed and authoritative, this study successfully incorporates the evolution of technology, laws, political policy and social development to put the origins of modern media into context. This historical perspective is long overdue. Since media development is actually the story of societal development, author Paul Starr does a tremendous job of detailing the roles of such diverse factors as innovation, invention, patronage, luck, law and competition, all of which shaped the media's development and helped determine its ultimate societal impact. This book is refreshingly light on political criticism, so each set of facts stands on its own. While Starr occasionally meanders from the main topic, the book's rich detail shows that he clearly enjoyed his research and writing. We consider his book essential reading for anyone interested in new and old media and how they were - and are - influenced by their societies.

MEDIA & CAPITALISM

This is by far the most exhaustive reading on the creation, growth, and perpetuation of media I have ever read.
At the outset, this is not a light read. Laced with history, the sociology of people within history, and trends operating in American and European culture, this is for serious students of both history and media. For that crowd, it will be a very pleasant read.
I give high praise to Paul Starr for being able to outline not only the growth of media and opinion, but also putting the growth in light of America's capitalistism and industrial strength.
He starts out by analyzing how European Nations like France and England tried to promote literacy through newsprint and postal services. He then outlines how those measures spilled into the United States during the Colonial Period.
Of course, newspapers were only the tip of the iceberg. Starr carefully analyzes how new inventions like the telephone, telegraph, film, and radio were used heavily for capitalistic gain as well as entertainment. At first, the U.S. Supreme Court was reticent to recognize First Amendment protection to these new mediums.
He also compares and contrasts Europe's tendency to nationalize many inventions instead of letting the market allow inventors to make money on their projects. Meticulously, he shows how the U.S. Navy tried to squelch Marconi's patent for wireless radio, and eventually how the Radio Act of 1927 preserved both the national and private interest.
In the end, Starr seems to point out that American Capitalism was instrumental not only in creating the media, but also allowing it to diversify and eventually find the same protection as print media--and eventually find a huge diversification in points of view.
Of course, all along he finds the naysayers like the Catholic League, the Hayes Code, and the Book Publishers Code that operated out of a fear of the public who did not trust these new medias.
Starr is a talented writer of history and can bring the elements related to new medias with such deft and articulation. He keeps the attention, occassionaly straying from the subject, but returning before interest is lost. Moreover, he does real well in keeping his own biases and prejudices aside, simply telling history instead of trying to interpret everything as either a conservative backlash, or a liberal trick.
Kudos to Starr. I look forward to his future endeavors.

The endoscopic section reviews gastrointesinal endoscopy for the general surgeon. It begins with an overview of the general principles of flexible endoscopy, and continues to discuss such procedures as upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, choledochostomy, colonoscopy, and pediatric endoscopy. The thoracoscopy section covers the basic principles of thoracoscopic surgery, including patient preparation and positioning, exploratory thoracoscopy for staging malignancies, esophagomyotomy, and operations for esophageal diverticula. New to the second edition are chapters on laparoscopic bariatric surgery, using hand-assisted devices in laparoscopy, and a new set of chapters on thoracoscopy. 50 new illustrations complement the text. A must-have reference for the general surgery resident or practicing surgeon.

A good guide for surgeons of laparoscopy and endoscopy

The SAGES MANUAL is a good pocket book for general surgeons.It is a portable and small but extended book.It gives everything about especially laparoscopy.It starts with equipment,patient preperation and troubleshooting and then continues with the everything of laporoscopy and endoscopy.If you have a question about something for laparoscopic surgery,you can be sure to find the answer in this good prepared and organized book.Organization of book is excellent.Everything is arranged .You don't lose your way in the book.Especially indication,technique and complications parts are very succesful.You can find a large section about the principles of laparoscopic hemostasis.Congratulations to writers

A wonderful resource

A great debt is owed to SAGES for the publication of this book. There is no other resource quite like it. It truly is "the bible" for anyone who performs laparoscopic surgery. Although there will always be different nuances in surgical technique, this is a wonderful starting point for begining laparoscopists.
