Operation: Enduring Quality
By Kristopher L. Arseneault
Note: I do not own the physical copy (Though I have borrowed it from a friend on multiple occasions), but I do own a digital copy from Osprey. Full disclosure here.
Enduring Freedom is the second expansion to Ambush Alley Games' newest edition of Force on Force, and it's definitely a stand-out in terms of quality. The previous entry (Road to Baghdad: Iraq 2003) was good but not great. Looking at this book, I think it's easy to say that the problem was far more the choice of campaign rather than the writers themselves.
The Road to Baghdad mainly covered the actual invasion, while leaving the Iraqi insurgency alone. Enduring Freedom, however, goes from the invasion all the way to today's current forces in Afghanistan, bringing along with it the changing rules and tactics that 10 years of counter-insurgency operations have brought along. There are rules for things such as PID checks, rules for limiting and penalizing using powerful support options, and procedure involving civilian casualties and such. For the Taliban, they also have rules making them more wily than your average insurgents, especially with their knowledge of terrain and the almost constant state of warfare they've been in.
Both sides also have a couple pages dedicated to the different levels of quality they could be, with Coalition forces varying from the lowly Afghani National Police to the insanely elite Tier One Special Mission Units, while the Taliban go from local thugs to veteran foreign fighters. If you aren't familiar with the conflict, these pages along with an abbreviated history (10 Pages) should be enough to get you started, as well as numerous other pieces of reference.
As for the scenarios, there are 20, with 6 (3 pairs of 2) being parts of larger battles. These scenarios range from roadside ambushes to special forces operations to planned coalition operations. Most (if not all) special rules are included right after the scenario, making it so you don't need to flip back to the new rules sections constantly. The scenarios are definitely flavorful, and even a step up from the last book, which had a lot of great stuff. It also helps that this set comes with pages detailing campaign specific fog of war cards (Available for download at the Ambush Alley Games website, if you would rather print them out instead of cutting the paper out of the book to copy them).
For Tables of Organization and Equipment, you get Afghan, Australian, Canadian, UK, US, Danish, Dutch, France, and German forces, along with the appropriate vehicles for the forces. A lot of these vehicles already have stats, though having them in the book itself rather than having to refer to the Main Rulebook is obviously a nice convenience. There are new rules for Australian, Canadian, Danish, and Dutch vehicles which were not in the original book.
As for extras, there are a great many pictures, along with larger Osprey illustrations of the individuals which are nice for painting reference. Each force has at least one of these, and there is a large painting guide and a written uniform guide for American, British, and Taliban forces. A miniatures guide, with suggestions for miniatures companies in 15mm, 20mm, and 28mm rounds out the book.
Overall? I love the book. It's an A-List production that not only gives you scenarios, but a lot of background and starting material for people who are just getting into the hobby. It's like the last book but with so much more packed in, probably because Afghanistan just has so much more to model than Iraq did. If you like the rules, the scenarios and rules are easily transferable to other theaters of war while the special rules can make insurgencies rougher and tougher and limit 1st World Nations with an RoE which isn't complex, but still restrictive. If you aren't into Force on Force rules, the reference material and scenarios alone are probably worth the price of admission.
All in all, it earns its 5-Star rating.

War Game Supplement

Its a pretty good supplement for war gamming in the Stan. Brought back some memories, the missions are pretty spot on.

Top Shelf Information
By shannon womer
Great set of rules and wonderful follow-up. Lots more information and just technical enough. Gives you what you need to place yourself there (if you had not already been there then) and experience some of that reality.
