The Jesus Prayer

I have practiced the Jesus prayer for years, but with no real guidance. I used the prayer primarily while walking and it helped me remember the universality of sin in the world and our need, both as corporate humanity and as individuals, to admit to this fact and acknowledge it in ourselves and others. Being sinners is one of the overarching facts that tie us together in the human family.

This book by Mathewes-Green has really helped me put the prayer into much clearer focus and helped me better understand the full power of the prayer. Coming from an Eastern Orthodox perspective, the author also helps to crack open a vision of the power of Orthodox prayer and spirituality. I highly recommend this book for those interested in prayer and/or Eastern Orthodoxy.

The Jesus Prayer made accessible

Frederica is a bridge author between E. Orthodoxy and other faith streams the way Henri Nouwen was for the RCC and evangelicalism. I sat under her workshops at Oxford CS Lewis Institute and have read all her books and dozens of others on the Jesus Prayer. Eastern Orthodox spirituality and theology and music has deeply impacted my own journey as a pastor. This book is direct, clear, and accessible for any Christian and even those seeking more understanding.

She has chosen to have half the book be in a Q and A format which works well because of the many nuances and viewpoints even among the Orthodox on the practice of the prayer and the related principles of spiritual discipline.

I believe this will be the modern standard to introduce millions of Christians to prayer that moves beyond shallow self-expressed prayers and formal written prayers to a place of constant presence with God so needed in our self-addicted world of miss-placed passions. I encourage you to read the book and more importantly, make the Jesus Prayer and similar scripture prayers the core of your prayer-practice.

Lots of great info!

Like other books by Frederica, it has a LOT of really good information and it feels like she is personally talking to you. It just feels like she writes these books without planning it out (like making a basic outline) or reading it after she's done, so it is written like she's having a conversation with you rather than writing a book. This book is also a bit too big for the Jesus Prayer that is only a few words long, but her personal accounts and the research she did on it is awesome and well worth the read, it just gets a bit too much after you get to the question and answers in the back. I got a lot out of it however and glad I read it!

Nine different ways to connect with God

Sacred Pathways is a refreshing look at how we connect to God and how our personality and unique design affect how we relate to Him. After introducing the concept of a spiritual temperament, he spends a chapter on each of the nine temperaments. He describes what these temperaments look like, how they interact with God and Scripture, and gives some biblical and/or contemporary examples of people with that temperament. There are a set of questions at the end of each chapter to help the reader assess which temperaments are most prevalent.

The last chapter is particularly useful, on "Understanding Your Sacred Pathway." There he gives suggestions on applying knowledge of your temperaments to worship, devotion, and bible study. The book has a number of good ideas on how to improve your devotional times, which can look as different as the people who have them. While I wish he could have gone a little further in the area of 'what do I do with this information?' I did find the book to be quite helpful and encouraging. It should be an interesting read for most Christians, especially those who feel like their current devotions have become dry (or have disappeared).

These days good Westerns are so hard to find, but THE RANGER AND THE REDHEAD is wonderful! You'd have to go a long way to find a heroine who is as spunky, yet refined as Charlotte Greenfield. A preacher's daughter on her way west, Charlotte (Charlie) needs to make a whole lot of changes in order to survive, but she never once compromises who she is down deep inside. She'd a fabulous heroine, one I loved and cheered for from the first page to the last.

Will Bondurant is her perfect match. Strong and sometimes taciturn, Will proves again and again that he is a hero worthy of the name. Watching Will and "Charlie" spar -- and make up -- is one of the most delightful things about this story. You just know that when you close the book that these two really are going to live happily ever after.

With the feel of the west as strong as the smell of woodsmoke, this is a fast-paced and well written book. I have a couple of Banning's on my TBR pile, and I've just moved them to the very top.

Great Adventure!

I enjoyed reading Miss Banning's story. It was the first I've read by this author. The hero and heroine were strong characters and this came through clearly. In addition, the authors demonstrate a link between corporate control structures and dividend payouts, report evidence that the existence of a loss is an additional determinant of dividend changes, and demonstrate that the tax status of the controlling shareholder and the firm's dividend payout are not linked. The conclusions reached in this book have important implications for the current debate on corporate governance, making it invaluable for academics, finance professionals, regulators and legal advisors.
