A Narrative of an Episode in Nicaragua History

Book Review: Adios Muchachos ( In Spanish) Author: Sergio Ramirez
The Author: Sergio Ramirez is re-known nicaraguan writer, a lawyer, and former member of the sandinista governing Junta throughout the eighties, then vice-president and more recently, chairman of the Sandinista political party. As a novelist he is known as author of several novels, his mosr recent is "Margarita Esta Linda La Mar" (1996), essayist and short story writer.
More than one country in Latina America had a writer for president. Costa Rica, Peru and Cuba (Marti), are only a few to name. Sergio managed to stay at the highest ranking governing circles for almost two decades from 1979 until his resignation in 1999 from his seat as Chairman of the Sandinista powerful political party. This was 3 years after his defeat running for his second term as vice-president candidate in 1996.
This book reveals a credible account from a true insider of the preamble to the war, the glory of victory, and the un-expected political struggle that the Sandinistas went through to stay in power and ultimately lose it. Because the free elections took place in a country that had been for ten years fighting a Contra War which depleted the national budget making it almost impossible to rule.
In his narrative, the protagonists come and go ( or die) like characters in a play. Some manage to come back "with a different costume" like a in giant theater, and history becomes a play with episodes. As Sergio relates, "I am glad I was not born before or after this chapter of history, because I would have missed it". Asked if he has any regrets, Sergio answers: "We did what it was right back then, what happened later we had few idea, how it would be "
Apparently, after reading the Epilog it seems that the true protagonist (if any other than the revolution itself) is Idania ( who was my sister) symbolizing the spirit of sacrifice and heroism that made this chapter of the nicaraguan history possible. Her martyrdom symbolizes the crushing of a dream. I was particularly moved by this. Idania, Araceli and Dora Maria were for the nicaraguan revolution what Haydee Santamaria and Celia Sanchez were for its cuban counterpart.
Sergio concludes his story with an interview with Claudia, the daughter that Idania had left in care of her parents ( and mine) when death came by surprise ( and to her 5 comrades) as member of the Sandinista Commando that was actually running the war in the Western Front in April 1979. The interview takes place in a Deli shop in Arlington, Virginia, an area of town where lobbyists, journalists and essayists meet for lunch and discuss policies and legislation. As she waves good bye before boarding the subway train, the scene symbolizes the return to normal lives of the protagonists of this Episode in the nicaraguan history. Apparently as if nothing has happened in last 20 years. Or has it? Is there a legacy or rewards? Sergio says there is...

The Mistakes of Nicaragua, Retold.

The life of Sergio Ramirez has been an effort to bring about logical, intelligent change to the Central American isthmus and to develop his narrative along revolutionary lines. This book is a prime example of the importance of Sergio as one of the most essential and overlooked authors in Latin American literature. His ability to bring alive the dreams, plights, success and defeat of the Nicaraguan revolution, more than 10 years their electoral downfall, shows how politics and human sensitivity are intertwined in Latin America. His account of the Sandinista revolution is excellent because from its start, he was a player, and although he did not fall within the dogmas of some of his contemporaries, he is not without fault. At its core, his account continues that old school adage "Don't mess with Uncle Sam".

The language is just so full of errors that -- at least for me as a non-native speaker -- reading is a pain. Especially incorrect grammar, missing connections of sentences, and ideosyncratic terms make it hard to follow. The text seems to have been written and never looked at again.

Helpful and interesting introduction

This is a good quick introduction. A good supplement to a course on modernist literature or art. What is important is that it shows the Modernist project as something that encompassed art, literature, psychology, science, and politics--in other words, it contextualizes the movement.

What more could you want

This book is everything it claims to be. It's a short but relatively comprehensive introduction to its subject matter that you could easily read in one sitting, maybe while out on your back porch on a day off. You learn enough of the subject matter that, while you may not have a full understanding of it, you'll at least be able to follow along with a conversation about it.

The Secrets of the Vanmers

I recieved an e-book copy from the author. Thank you Very much. This is the second book in the series. Even though this is a young adult book i truly enjoyed it. The friends and the action. You also learn more about Janir and her past. This is a very well written book with an easy to follow story line.You have wizards and warriors, dwarves and elfs. A truly fascinating read for people of all ages.I can,t wait for the next installment in the series to see what happens next.

Fantasy/Adventure

Janir is a 16 year old girl who lives with her step father. She returns home to find a war is brewing nearby. She sets off with Karile (her best friend who happens to be a wizard) and Saoven (an elf warrior). They face many obstacles and dangerous creatures during this quest, but she is determined to find the truth. Her childhood home is in danger and she must face the most powerful family of all , the Vanmars.

I look forward to reading the first book in the series The Key of Amatahns to find out more about Janir and her family.

Fantastic read. I recommend for YA as well as Adult readers. Elisabeth Wheatley is an author to watch for.

Great characters set in a fantastic world!

This was such a fun, fast-paced, high fantasy novel! I was instantly drawn into the Ja1nir's crazy life and Elisabeth's writing kept me so invested throughout the entire book

Now before I really get going on this review, let me start by saying that I did not read the first book before reading this one. This did cause for a bit of confusion especially when it came to the world that Elisabeth created but I was able to catch on fast and still enjoy the book.

Janir has just been through an adventure of a lifetime when we first meet her. During the first book she was on a quest of some sort, met a lot of people along the way (some good, some definitely not so good), learned a few secrets of her past, found a whole lot of questions of her present & future, and faced quite a bit of life-threatening events. All Janir wants is some peace and quiet when she returns but as it often times turns out, we don't always get what we want. Again, Janir is thrown into a life of craziness, some of it fun, some of it scary, and all of it entertaining!

I LOVED Janir. She was a sweet, loving, girl with a huge heart and a good head on her shoulders, and she also had a bit of a backbone to her. Janir was always so quick to help her friends out but she was also one to not let people walk all over her. Even though Janir is one tough cookie, she also lets some of her insecurities show in this novel which made me love her even more! Janir is an Argetallam, and according to the beliefs of everyone in the kingdom, Argetallam = Bad. . .VERY BAD. Janir had a tough time trying to be proud of the person she was and balancing that with the shame she oftentimes felt for her heritage. My heart hurt for her because I could see how great she was but it was really difficult for her to see that at certain times.

I feel that this is the part that I should mention the bit of romance that I saw! Okay, before you romance-aholics get too excited, there wasn't a whole lot in this story but there were definitely the makings of a relationship within this book! Saoven is an elf warrior who has helped Janir out a tough situation more than once. He is strong and brave and he is always there to help save Janir. These two are most definitely feeling something for each other and I cannot wait to see what they do with those feelings in the next book!

Another character that stood out so very much to me was Karile, a young wizard and the sort-of best friend to our main character. Holy crap everyone, this guy was all sorts of fun! Karile added so much pizzazz and humor to this story! He is definitely a troublemaker, too curious for his own good, and he was always dragging Janir into his messes. Even though he sounds like a giant accident waiting to happen, and trust me people that is EXACTLY what he is, he always had good intentions!

The world that Elisabeth created was so awesome! It was definitely a historical/fantasy setting. This is back in the day when there are High Lords, castles, and raging wars between surrounding kingdoms but on top of that there are also dragon-like beings, elves, wizards, other fantastic creatures, and magic! Like I said before, I really wish I would have read the first book before because I feel like that would have given me just a bit more background information on the world Elisabeth created. I may have been confused for the first little bit of the book but once I began reading, I had no problems imaging the places and things that Janir was seeing.

This story is a really fast-paced story. Janir finds herself in one mess right after another and while some had me laughing others kept me on the edge of my seat. Elisabeth's writing made this world easy to imagine and her characters were all nicely developed and entertaining. The story left off at a great part and I cannot wait to find out what happens next with Janir, Karile, and the rest of the great characters I met in this book! This was a great book and I think it will certainly appeal to fans of The Hidden Sun by J. Lloyd Morgan and Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas.

Interesting and fun!

Okay, I must admit that I'm the type of person who is fascinated by nature documentaries. I picked up this book on a whim, and loved every page - it's like a PBS special on paper! I found that it includes an impressive cross-section of naturalists throughout history, all over the world. Sometimes humorous, sometimes heartbreaking, but always profound and sincere, this book was simply a delight. I even learned a bit.
My favorite section was the one on the mating habits of scorpions - the gentleman who documented the scenes was touching in his simple joy of nature and observation. I felt affection for many of these dedicated writers who took such pleasure in watching nature without feeling the need to destroy and display it. It's pretty light reading - and perhaps could be a good "bathroom book" but is inspiring in a quiet way. Recommended!

The Selections of The Greats

Great to read a cross section of selections from the great naturalists...if only we embraced what is here in our society today, we might preserve the human nest, called earth, for future generations. Alas, we don't, so we won't. Our species is running out its own clock.....
