When he realizes that the day has begun without him, he is so shocked that he faints. Later, his friends find him and put him to bed in the chicken coop. Feeling as though life is no longer worth living, he melodramatically begins to bid his farewells. After some funny bantering about Elvis losing his pluck ("He's lost his cluck?"), his friends devise a plan to restore his confidence. Cazet's writing is filled with quirky characters, simple wordplay, and gentle humor. The cartoon artwork perfectly reflects the tone of the text. Elvis appears in profile on the cover, spraying his throat as he prepares to sing, and the shape of the comb on his head brings to mind the trademark hairstyle of his namesake. Denys Cazet is the author and illustrator of more than 25 picture books for children, including Never Spit On Your Shoes, winner of the California Young Readers Medal.

The books about Minnie and Moo are his first for beginning readers. He was inspired to tell stories about the silly cow best-friends when he passed a herd of cows in which all but two were facing the same way. The other two stood next to each other, facing in the opposite direction from the rest of the cows. He immediately dubbed the two nonconformists Minnie and Moo and imagined the adventures two cows who were loyal friends rather than followers of the herd. Mr. Cazet is currently writing I Can Read Books featuring Elvis the Rooster from the farm on which Minnie and Moo live.

Mr. Cazet was an elementary school teacher for 25 years, and has also been a school librarian and elementary school media specialist. He remains active in his local elementary school parent and advisory committees. A California native, Mr. Cazet lives with his family in the foothills of the Napa Valley.

Elvis the Rooster Almost Goes to Heaven is a very funny book. Not sure if kids will get all the puns/jokes, but, as an adult, if you have to read a book over and over, this one would be a good choice. I purchased this book to include in my elementary school's library collection.

I really enjoyed this one

When an author produces as many books as Mr Crane, an ongoing concern is whether or not he can keep the story fresh. I don't know why I worried.

This story seemed to me to have a different feel from Sienna. Less melancholy and insecure.

Added to that, frustrating characters who, quite frankly need at least one good shake or at the very least, a stern talking to, together with a worthy opponent and other such good stuff which I'm not going to talk about because, well, spoilers.

My one comment? Kat’s change seemed very rapid. But then I guess metas are all about speed…

I have to say, I really enjoyed this one. The dilemma Sienna faces all the time – made me think. And I suspect that, despite the opportunities being offered to her, her problems may be about to get worse... and I can't wait to read all about it.

I love the character development for Kat especially

I have always been a big fan of Robert J Crane and this book does it again! Sienna develops more in this book and is changing all the time. I love the character development for Kat especially. SPOILER: She stops being a shallow ditz to an extent.

Enjoyable, but Not the Best of the Series

There are a lot of these books now, and while the author's done an amazing job at generally keeping them fresh, interesting, and coherent, I feel that he slipped a bit on this one.

On the upside, Sienna's snark was superb in this book and I actually laughed out loud several times.

On the downside, while Sienna's a superb character, her psychological travails of trying to find the balance between human and inhuman, tough but caring, willing to kill when needed but knowing when to draw the line, etc. seemed kinda repetitive, both within this book and in conjunction with the rest of the series. I found some of the characters (e.g. "Guy Friday") simply cartoonish and undeveloped and it detracted from the flow for me. Kat Forrest is a major character in this book and she's utterly unlikable, though while I didn't like the unlikability, I did find the development of her character well done.

There were also a couple of things I found that were inconsistent and that was distracting as well (I'm not going to describe them because they'd be spoilers).

Ultimately, it always good to read more about the girl out of the box, and overall I did enjoy the book and I'm looking forward to the next one.

Loved Jace

Have is a wolf shifter who's wolf is insanely huge compared to the other shifters. While serving in the army he is accused of a hideous slaughter committed by his wolf. His memories are spotty and so he believes ha has done these horrific acts. He and his brothers along with there pack members are trying to stop a group who are kidnapping shifters and experimenting on them. Then one night someone breaks into their safe house and turns out to be Piper Wilding from a pack shifters that they are working closely with on trying to save the captured shifters. She is looking for her brother who is missing. Can one damaged wolf and one wolf who refuses to ever mate become a pair. Get this book and enjoy the story.

I loved this book. Alisa knows how to write a book that keeps you entertained and on the edge of your seat wondering what's going to happen next. I love all the suspense in the books. This book is fast paced and will have you finishing it in one sitting.

The River Brother's are back and even hotter than before. Now you get to see what happened with Jace and why he can't shift. He has a dark secret that he's afraid to tell people. He is instantly attracted to Piper, but he tries to fight it. He doesn't want to get involved with another shifter. It could prove to cause more issues than he wants or needs. But how do you fight your own wolf?

This book is a standalone, but it is also following along the same case they were dealing with in Jaxson's book. I can't wait to read Jared's book and find out what his secret is. I have a feeling I will be shocked beyond belief by his.

An intriguing, excellent shifter romance continuing the series

Jace River may no longer trust his wolf enough to shift again, but that wouldn’t stop his human strength from taking down an intruder in his family home. He just never expected this delectable piece of wolf in a hoodie to be the sister of some of his family’s temporary guests. Nor could he ever have imagined the impact this one woman would have on his life.

Piper Wilding was no man’s (or wolf’s) fool, ever. This massive, handsome shifter hadn’t caught her, she’d let him – in order to use her sexiest wiles to escape… only that wasn’t working out as she’d planned because this shifter made her own wolf whimper in need, and no one had ever managed that before. But all of that was beside the point, she needed to reach her brother Daniel who was supposed to be staying here and this man was not going to stop her.

Piper’s tale about a missing brother, a shifter brother had enough truth and danger to it that Jace allowed her into the family compound and his family’s guest’s bedroom. While it was obvious that the siblings had a volatile relationship, and that her brother didn’t believe her – for some reason Jace did and he would gather up his pack to help her find her missing brother, Noah. But Piper waited for no man and soon gave them the slip to go off and do this on her own. That was a miscalculation on her part, but she’d learn, eventually.

Jace takes us further into the evil shifter plot of doing medical experiments on shifters and humans that we first learned about in Jaxson. And what an intense and satisfying journey this story will be. The danger is sharper, deeper. The attraction between Piper and Jace is strong, sexy and compelling. And the evil is greater and more widespread than first believed.

Jace is a wounded soul in many ways. He is unable to shift into his wolf because he can no longer trust or control his wolf – who is massive, powerful and not someone you want to make angry. He believes that this wolf is responsible for many deaths during a military mission overseas, it is a responsibility that weighs heavily on him – taking him just this side of madness. Piper believes in him and his wolf and will be vital to his survival, and will bring a truth to him that he desperately needs. Piper is wounded as well, the emotional abuse of her father has made her into the woman she is today – one who rarely trusts and will never, ever be mated. Together they will find that person perfect for each of them, now they just have to be brave enough to take the risks involved in loving each other.

I enjoyed Jace very much. It’s a fast paced, action packed story with such heartache within it as well. Filled with extremely strong characters and a secondary cast that pull everything together into a world that I had no trouble falling into. This is a shifter romance that is powerful, sexy and will keep you turning pages. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys paranormal romance, military romance or simply a strong love story. Go check it out for yourself. You’ll find a fascinating series full of alpha men and women, along with a captivating storyline.

Much better book.......

The 5th Edition of this book has been revamped by Dr Lumb to its infinite benefit. Nunn's used to be a book that you waded through after getting the essentials from Wests more concise book. Studying for my anaesthetics primary this year I found the new edition much more readable and with its specialised sections in the rear (pathophysiology and altered physiology) will be a book that I will keep referring to in the furture.
The book still is a little irrelevant to me in some of its detail and it can often be difficult to determine the exact point that is trying to be made but the change in editorship has made for a great improvement.
One section that puzzles me is the first which seems quite a detailed explaination of atmospherics which has very little relevance to the topic matter in reality.
Still an essential for both the trainee and then clinician alike.

Respiratory made easy

To clarify: I am a Nurse Anesthetist student with an extensive critical care background. That said, this book does an outstanding job of taking a very complex subject and breaking it into digestible peices. I wish I had read this 10 years ago as my understanding of and care for patients with critical respiratory issues would have been greatly improved.

I would recommend this book for anyone who really wants to understand how the respiratory system works from a macro to micro level.

Great book easy to read and the graphics are really unseestandable. Must read it if you like lung phisiology. As a ceitical care doctor it is a must read if you trrat patients with lung diseases, spacially if you treat patients under mechanical ventilation

Since its establishment, the field of American criminology has been dominated by liberal scholars. But, over the past ten years, neoconservatism has become a force in criminology. Wilson, the leading advocate of this right-ward move, and Herrnstein, who is noted for his work on I.Q., race, and meritocracy, have written what should become the major source on this important development in criminology. Its moderate, Aristotelian behavioral theory is reminiscent of Edward Banfield's Unheavenly City Revisited and Ernest Van Den Haag's Punishing Criminals , but this book probably will have greater impact than either of these or any of Wilson's and Herrnstein's earlier writings. It will be praised by many and criticized by others who will complain that it does not expose the proper ``myths about crime,'' does not explain why ``the rich get richer and the poor get prison,'' and turns attention away from the corrupting influence of modern institutions. A Very Important Breakthrough in Understanding Crime

When Wilson and Herrnstein's "Crime and Human Nature" first appeared in 1985, it caused a major debate. American sociologists had generally ascribed crime to environmental factors, particularly poverty. Wilson and Herrnstein proposed that constitutional factors, coupled with poor parenting, were really the causes of crime. It was the first major examination of such factors since the early days of criminology. The authors proposed that the following constitutional factors predisposed an individual to crime:
1) Mesomorphic body type: There are three body types and mesomorphs are described as heavily built, either muscular or fat, and shorter than average. The authors don't even attempt to explain why this would predispose an individual to crime. But the statistics they use to back up this claim can't really be denied. Criminals are overwhelmingly mesomorphs with a slight emphasis to endomorphism (roundness) rather than ectomorphism (lean build). Stereotypes of criminals back up this claim: Think of the way famous mafiosos are built: John Gotti, Sammy Gravano, Tony Soprano, etc. Realizing that they can't explain why this affects crime, the authors simply state that it shows that constitutional factors matter; The other biological factors they describe are more straightforward.
2) Age: Criminals are predominantly young. Crime peaks from ages 16-25 and begins to descend downwards from thereon, although violent crime peaks from ages 24-28. Unlike body type, the authors seem to think they know why age causes crime, offering several possibilities. Young people have shorter time horizons, and are more interested in immediate gratification. Young people are less well off financially, have less dependents and so on. Few people would dispute age as a major factor in crime.
3) Sex: Men commit far more crimes than women, although the figures aren't completely clear as to how much more. An estimation of 90 percent seems likely. The question is why? Obviously men are more aggressive than women, but why do women commit crimes? The authors state that women commit crimes for the same reasons as men. As for why, all they can say is that for reasons both nature and nurture, men have different sex roles than women, and these affect crime.
4) Intelligence: Low intelligence, particularly the verbal component, seems to have a major impact on the criminal individual. The reasons are that those with low intelligence discount future events as being too far off to matter. They try and live for the moment. They may also be less able to grasp moral concepts.
5) Personality: Criminals differ on personality in nearly every study done on them. Criminals tend to be more aggressive, unafraid, assertive, impulsive and extroverted than others. They are also poorly socialized, meaning they display little regards for others feelings.
The authors are quick to note that constitutional factors are not only hereditary. They may also be affected by poor pre-natel care. Thus the genes alone don't dictate criminal behavior, but they do predispose an individual to crime. If those traits are reinforced by certain environmental factors, then criminal behavior may result.
By far the most important developmental factor, according to the authors, is parental style. Inconsistent and random discipline prevents a child from knowing when to expect punishment. The rules are not made clear, and the child never internalizes them. Furthermore, a cold parent does not produce the necessary attachment with their child that is important in later development. The child never develops a desire to please the parent or obey the rules. This pattern continues into adulthood. As far as developmental and environmental factors go, this is really the only one the authors point to as having a major impact. Indeed, they spend the next few chapters explaining why other factors don't matter, including schools, neighborhoods, labor markets, and television violence. Delinquents are likely to flock together in the schoolyard: A few rotten boys don't spoil the others. Certain kinds of neighborhoods attract certain kinds of people, and they point to an ecological fallacy: Ascribing the characteristics of an individual to the group where he lives. Labor markets only marginally affect crime, and the reasons are not entire clear yet. One environmental factor they do point to are durgs, specifically alcohol and heroin (the book came out before the crack epidemic broke in 1985, or surely crack would been included). These alter a persons time horizons and lead to impulsive behavior, as well as the need for money to support the habit. It is not clear how constitutional factors affect people in predisposing them to use drugs though. Perhaps they share some of the above constitutional traits.
After setting forth their model of criminal behavior as a choice that people make based on biological factors coupled with inadequate parenting, it seems only logical to expect policy suggestions on how to reduce crime. But they offer few. One reason is that since the book was both controversial and revolutionary, they were first interested in seeing their theory of criminal behavior become accepted. Since being written, it has indeed gained widespread acceptance, although it doesn't explain white-collar crime, and doesn't seem to explain organized crime either. The authors would counter that organized crime results from the same factors that they lay out in their general model. And it seems a valid point in explaining organized crime, who's members share many characteristics with petty criminals.
What is missing from the book is causation. After establishing an elegant an encompassing theory of crime which looks at both biological and environmental factors, the authors need to fill in the blanks. Most notably, why do mesomorphs show more criminal tendencies? And why do some men become criminals, while most don't? And how does one explain why women commit crimes? There is something notably missing here: How does one explain aggression, and the link between muscularity and aggressiveness?
Since 1985 researchers have closed in on the answer. It seems that the male hormone testoserone is responsible for aggression. Men with low testoserone claim to be tired, and unenergetic. After receiving the hormone, they say they feel better. No studies have been, however, to give men with high levels of testoserone more of the hormone for fear of uncontrolled behavior. Nonetheless, the correlation seems clear. It seems that mesomorphs, youths, and men all have higher testoserone than their counterparts. This explains their aggressive behavior. But even those three factors together cannot explain crime. Low intelligence, bad temperament, and poor parenting must also be factored in. A young man with high testoserone and a well adjusted personality will be highly successful. Indeed, society needs energetic young men to fight its wars, fight fires, and police the streets, among other jobs. It is only aggression in tandem with the other factors that is a problem.
Finally, we must address how to reduce crime, based on the model described here. One solution has been eugenics. The neo-Eugenics movement loved this book, using it to claim that crime is genetic, and to reduce crime all we have to do is sterilize criminals. While there is much in this book to support that claim, there will still be individuals born with these genetic traits. And most of all, society finds that solution abhorrent and unethical. I believe there are better ways to deal with criminals. If criminals are aggressive, impulsive, short-sighted young men, one way to deal with them is to slow them down. The tranquilizing effect of drug treatments would slow their impulses, and make them think before they act. No such drug has been introduced, but it seems like one could be not to far in the offing. Treatment programs like those offered by Stanton Samenow which help criminals by making them think about their every action, and what it will lead to in the future, could be done in tandem with drug treatment. By doing these things, along with strict policing, we can reduce crime greatly in our society.

Not PC, but the truth often isn't

I read this book for a philosophy class in college. After having done more research, I realized how important this work really is. The prevailing theories and proposed solutions for the crime problem in the U.S. are not represented here. That is mostly likely because the views and statistics found in this book are not politically correct. However, I believe they have much more merit, as they are founded on common sense and realistic strategies.

People reading this book will understand how throwing money at problems is ineffective and wasteful. You will also understand a very basic principle that I believe is greatly misunderstood:

There is no such thing as effective rehabilitation. Rehabilitation is a myth.

That isn't to say that people in prison cannot benefit from time, patience, and education. The simple truth is that there is no known effective method for changing people's behavior. And I think the general population has been duped into believing there is.

In any case, give this book a read, and see if it doesn't challenge the way you view the world and the people in it.

The authors present the whole picture, theories, evidence, and controversies, with rigor and clarity. You will not find a better survey of the subject anywhere. The book should also be required reading for anybody who wants to learn how to construct an argument.

About the Author
Boyd Morrison is an author, actor, engineer, and Jeopardy! champion. He started his career working on NASA's space station project at Johnson Space Center, where he got the opportunity to fly on the Vomit Comet, the same plane used to train astronauts for zero gravity. After earning a PhD in engineering from Virginia Tech, he used his training to develop thirteen US patents at Thomson/RCA. Boyd then managed a video game testing group in Microsoft's Xbox division before becoming a full-time writer. For non-fiction thrills, he enjoys white water rafting, skiing, scuba diving, and bungee jumping. Boyd is also a professional actor, appearing in films, commercials, and stage plays. In 2003 he fulfilled a lifelong dream and became a Jeopardy! champion. He currently lives in Seattle with his wife.

By-The-Numbers Thriller

Ever read one of those books that you really want to like, but you had trouble getting into? You give it the benefit of the doubt, and read another chapter, hoping it's just your mood, or the fact that you had a hard day. And four or five days and several chapters later you've read so far that even though you're still not into the book now you feel guilty when thoughts of giving up cross your mind.

I really wanted to love Boyd Morrison's THE ROSWELL CONSPIRACY. Boyd's a terrific guy; his books are very popular; and he's from Seattle, my backyard. Here's the thing: there's nothing wrong with this thriller. It's by-the-numbers genre fare, and handled quite capably. In fact, if you like Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt, you'll probably love Boyd Morrison's Tyler Locke. Handsome, smart, athletic and handy in a firefight (not to mention anytime you need someone to pilot your C-17), Locke is perhaps a stereotypical thriller hero, ably assisted by friend, engineer and former Special Forces sergeant Grant Westfield.

My problem with THE ROSWELL CONSPIRACY is that it's too cookie-cutter. Like I said, it's not bad. It's just been done before, and more originally, by guys like Cussler, who invented this particular sub-genre a generation ago. Oh, did I mention that if you like that sort of thing--muscular action figures (guys and gals), globe-trotting searches for clues to ancient riddles, world-changing discoveries and/or treasures, constant danger from evil, power-mad villains with access to the nastiest of weapons--you'll love this book?

Boyd Rocks the old Roswell Conspiracy in a new direction!

Boyd Morrison's Dynamic Duo of Tyler Locke and Grant Westfield get a fresh new platform from the "Roswell Incident" to do what they do best: discover truths, follow archeological and undercover criminal gov. ops' trails, hit on girls, have girls hit on them... and solve an improbable new theory/conspiracy outside Area 51 lore. Readers who have read Morrison's The Ark, and The Vault, will be just as thrilled, if not more, with Tyler & Grants action and adventure, around the globe. As usual, Boyd Morrison creates an action/thriller that takes a total twist away from any preconceived notions you may have about the subject matter, Thank You Boyd! Since the Roswell incident has been beaten to death in all kinds of media reports, books, conspiracies, etc... I was dubious of this book, but being a fan of Morrison's other well-crafted stories on "old" subjects, I jumped in and was glad I did. A page-turning action/thriller you won't want to put down, or turn off if you read it in e-book format. I love everything Tyler and Grant get into, I wouldn't mind running with them - as they are perfectly "normal" guys who have been well-trained from their pasts,to triumph over the bad guys in most creative ways. Loved it! 5 stars!

Fantastic international locations, fast paced plot

You might think that you know the story of Roswell but Morrison skillfully weaves a fast paced action-adventure story that continues to surprise throughout the book. I love the international locations and having experienced the jetboats in New Zealand, it's great to see them used for a chase scene. Tyler Locke and his sidekick Grant rescue Faye, an older lady who was given an artefact by what she perceived as an alien all those years ago at Roswell. This leads them on a trail through Australia to Easter Island and then the Nazca ruins with a dramatic conclusion high above the earth. I enjoyed the research that had gone into the book as well as the fictional story that kept my attention. This is definitely my favorite of Boyd Morrison's books so far.
